looking for a tactical shotgun that won't break the bank, has anyone shot the HP9 from norinco? any problems with reliability (i know this might seem a dumb question to some, it's a norinco after all lol, only going to use it for 3 or 4 competitions a year at most), ergonomics or otherwise?

Mine needed a little tweaking of the shell stops to be 100% reliable. Now its great and I have enough rds thru it to feel confident bringing it quadding and hiking. For a few hundred more you can get an 870 express which is no better, and does not come factory with short barrels so figure $150 on top of that if you want a shorty. If you want dirt cheap the Maverick 88 is a solid choice and the Stevens 350 security (Ithaca clone) gets good reviews.
I had a 14" hp9 for around a year and while I haven't had a Remington to compare, I didn't have any issues with reliability. Sold it to get a 8.5" grizzly, the only problem with the grizzly has been one of the springs in the receiver falls out when the trigger group is removed. Doesn't effect function, just a pain in the ass when disassembling to clean. Also seems like the action bars are a bit trickier to remove and reinstall in the receiver on the grizzly compared to the hp9, but that's going on memory so take it with a grain of salt.

Moving along, I've handled a 1990's remy 870 and agree that there is nothing finer in a shotgun. HOWEVER, the new line of 870's will leave you frustrated and poor. A friend of mine picked up a new 870 and has had several issues with it unfortunately.
Having owned a history of Norc M14's, the only thing I can say about he Norc/Grizz line of shotguns atleast you can easy fix most of these issues and usually are for people who like to tweak.
A moderator moved my topic here :S, was a little perplexed by it too. Thanks for the heads up on the 870, a friend at the range had just bought one and within 3 rounds of trap broke the pin for the slide, ending his day quite quickly. I found a deal on cabela's for a mossberg 500 with pistol grip for 20$ more then the HP9, I think the right choice is now obvious lol.
Parts on an actual "HP9" should not be breaking at all. The 780 is a piece of dog #$&^, however the H9 is not. There should be threads on here dating back that have countless testimonies just like the Norinco 1911 regarding reliability and durability.
No issues with my HP9-1 acquired in 2007. I've reconfigured the furniture, had it drilled and tapped for an optic rail, changed the magazine tube cap for a swivel loop and added a side-saddle.
I also upgraded to a high-visibility magazine follower on general principles. I haven't actually changed any of the parts because of function issues.
I had less issues with the HP9-1 on extraction that I did with a new 870. I had to polish the 870 chamber to get it to reliably extract cheapie factory 12ga.

Zero problems with my HP9. While certainly nowhere near as smooth or refined as my dad's 25+ year old Mossberg 500, it's easily as reliable. Just keep in mind that while they're almost universally parts-interchangeable with an 870, the 18 1/2" barrelled version isn't quite - the barrel lug isn't in the standard location. I think that length model is unique in that, but don't quote me.
As others have said though, be sure you're getting an actual HP9 or Grizzly and NOT a 780.

No problems with my HP9-1. Feed and extraction have been perfect.
All of the 870 accessories that I have bought have fit fine without mods.
She's a beauty, where did you order yours from, so far wolverine supplies seems to be the cheapest?
