Anyone own one of these? I've been thinkin' about getting one, just because ammo is so cheap and I can use it in my SKS as well. Are they accurate? How's the workmanship (if it's anything like my JW-27, I'm guessing the answer is crap-on-a-stick, but I have to ask!)? How's the quality of the stock? Also, assuming the stock is the typical laquered-pulpy-cottonwood garbage, what model rifle is it similar to, ie; is there an aftermarket synthetic stock that would fit well? I prefer synthetic stocks anyway, as I have a tendency to bash my rifles around a lot. Any info would be much appreciated! Thanx guys!

whassa matta w/savage?

Funny you should suggest a Savage, since I already own one :D The model 111FCXP3, the one that comes w/the 3x9 bushnell scope. It's already bagged me a couple deer, so I'm happy with it (although the damn thing almost gave me scope-eye the first time I shot it, haven't had an eyepiece come that close to my orbital bone since I was 10 and my dad let me shoot his .30-30!!)

the stevens, or the mossberg bolt is also inexpensive (of course, the stevens basically IS a savage).

Or you could save a couple more dollars and just hit 'em over the head with a rock i suppose.... :)

Well I ignored all advice offered an bought one. It looked a lot better than I expected. Shoots horribly though. My best groups out of several factory and home load attempts are still around 2+" at 50 yards.
My recommendation would be to NOT buy one of these. 7.62 X 39 is an interesting cartridge and I would like to have a decent inexpensive rifle in this chambering unfortunately the JW103 is not a decent rifle.

That's all I needed to hear. I guess I'll put the $275 towards something else  Thanx for the input everyone!

I played with one for a bit and it's not so bad. Quality of machining and bluing is acceptable. Scope bases were just a bit small so you may have to play with rings to get one that fits tight.

The bolt handle was a bit sloppy but the bolt did lock up tightly. Feeding and extraction were just fine. Surplus ammo definitely shot hotter in this rifle then the SKS.

Trigger is adjustable but really hard to get perfect trigger pull. Decent for sure and certainly better then how many factory rifles come.

You have to bed that action into the stock. The inletting is enormous. After bedding and floating the barrel, I had handloads that gave me the occasional MOA group at 100yds. Many were in the 1.5 MOA range, even with green box sp Norc ammo. I used Hornady bullets, Lee collet neck sized Win brass, Win LR primers, H335 and WCC680 powder.

Unlike the M305 which is way more gun for the money, these bush rifles are priced exactly right. Pity there are so few bolt rifles for the 7.62X39 cartridge as I too like it for hunting and plinking - low cost and recoil.

My JW-27 bolt-action .22 is the same story. Did you figure out a way to tighten it up at all? It's perfectly functional, just annoying and not very confidence-inspiring. Reminds me of my old Ford Tempo's shifter, like stirring a pot of soup

A couple years ago Lever arms had those for $235.00, it seemed like a great deal, at that time the Stevens 200 wasn't out yet and there didn't seem to be many low priced guns. I went in with money in my pocket to buy one, after examining one I could not buy it, the bolt was sloppy and it felt like a piece of junk.

Everyone that's suggesting a Savage or Stevens over the JW-103.......
Where are these guns? I only know of the CZ's the mini mausers(Remington soon) and some Ruger's that used to be available. Did Savage used to make a bolt action rifle in 7.62X39?

Mine puts 7.62 x39 surplus into 1.5 inches at 100 metres. It should do much better with a bedding job and handloads.
Bought it from Lever for $235.00 and haven't regretted it at all.

Dunno of any Savage models chambered for 7.62x39mm. I was referring to my .30-06 when whatzhisname said I should buy a Savage instead of a Norc  Hey, at least I knew what I meant! heh :D Sorry for the misunderstanding, didn't mean to get yer hopes up.

Thanks for clearing that up. I would like a bolt action 7.62X39 or even a barrel for a single shot would be nice.

I agree. In fact, I'd much prefer a single shot over a bolt-action. I coulda sworn that NEF made handi-rifles chambered for this round, but I must have been on glue when I found it cuz I looked on their website just now and there's no listing for it. Maybe if enough people asked them nicely they'd start making them? It'd be a smart business decision, what with all the cheap ammo out there. Maybe a poll or petition is in order?

Yeah, I thought NEF made one too. If I could have found one around here I would have one... but, I've rebarreled a Savage to 7.62x39, so I'm no longer interested.

Now, if I could find the NEF in 500s&w somewhere... :D
