Norinco JW-14: 25 round mags: use Marlin M70 mags...sweet.

I love my JW-14, but let's face it the little 10 round mags suck.

Searching around the net, I finally came across the recommendation to use marlin Model-70 mags. I bet this would include the 'nickel" ones as well, but I wanted a 25 round banana, like the Norinco is always pictured with, but is never included.

So I found "Champion" brand clear plastic bananas marked "Fits Marlin 70/795". Every rifle is a little different, but I found I had to use a flat file and whittle down the sides of the top of the mag where it enters the rifle...especially one side that had a little flat rib. This 1/64th" rib was causing the mag sides to "pinch" the rounds and prevent them from coming up into place to be chambered after a shot.

I could replicate the problem by holding the mag, totally separate from the rifle, and gently squeezing the sides. I would strip away a round and the rest would stay put until ever-so-gently released the pressure, and up they'd come!
So a few strokes with the file to every-so-slightly "thin" the mag (as needed by MY rifle...YOURS may differ!! test test test first!)...

The end result is, and this makes me very pleased, that the JW-14 will actually cycle with CCI Quiets, I kid you not! The only semi-auto 22 I have ever seen do so. Tosses the casings a good 5-7 feet away too...

phhht-phhht-phhht-phhht-phhht...hilarious.

And the mag still fits snug in the rifle as well - no wobble: none.

And one fascinating "wrinkle": the last round fails to load...that's the only one. But it makes me think, why hasn't someone designed this in? You empty 24 rounds, you probably have lost count...and instead of running completely out, you get the dreaded "click", but you know you have one last round, only a straight bolt pull away!

It's like the reserve switch on a motorcycle tank. I wonder if anyone has designed this into a mag?

I don't know why it is happening here - other than I suppose when I get down to one round, the walls of the mag "pinch" it again, because there are no others holding them apart. Some more filing would reduce this I expect - but I actually like the feature.

I really like it.
Time for a patent!

In the meantime, if you have a Norinco JW-14 and would like a 25 round mag..."Champion" bananas for the model 70, and POSSIBLY a tiny bit of filing...30 seconds worth.

And then, just ad Quiets....hahaha....phhht-phhhht-phhhht

Won't work in the jw-25, it uses CZ mags. I have tried the 795 mag in my jw-14, but it's not working 100%... I'll try the suggestion above. Other than that though, the gun has been flawless, not one jam yet!

If after you get a failure to load....you pull back the bolt and look down see that the next round is too low in the mag to be picked up and chambered...you have the same problem I had. Sand/file off the rectangular bit that makes the mag a tiny bit too think, and it squeezes the rounds, and they stick in place after a shot..

You can tell, because it you remove the mag just a bit, you see the round pop up a few millimeters to the top.

I just found a JW-25, and will be looking for spare mags to tinker with that as well...CZ, hmm? Interesting.
