Norinco JW14 Magazine Compatibility?

Hello all!

Just picked up a brand new Norc JW14 in .22LR :rockOn:

Nifty little rifle! I'm going to beat the unholy sh*t out of her.

The only gripe is the mag, it's pure junk, functions fine but it's plastic and flimsy.

I'm told that Marlin 795 .22LR mags work in it, can anyone confirm this for me from experience before I go chasing one down?

Do a search on here for JW-14. Recently, several articles have been written by members about Marlin, ProMag and Champion mags fitting. Very little, if any, work needed to them to perform.

The mag I use in my youtube video is a "Champion" 25-round banana - it is clear plastic, with a grey upper part, and is marked "Fits Marlin M795 M70".
They are ALSO a little delicate-feeling, but, hey, they're 25 rounds...I painted my black.

The official word I got was that M70 mags fit. A mag that is ONLY for a M795 may NOT, I do not know.

I got them at a local store, the Halifax Army Navy surplus and gun shop.

Factory Marlin 795 mags DO NOT work. I modded a Promag 795 mag to fit. Takes a bit of sanding on the sides of the mag, and the little piece that catches the mag release needs to be narrowed down. The stock also needs to be opened up to allow the mag to seat properly. Hi-cal has the mags. Well worth it.

I really like the promag 795 25 rounders, that sounds like very minimal work to do as well. An exacto and some sandpaper lol

Also if it isn't too much of a pain, could you post a quick pic or two of the slight mods you did?

Just so I get an idea of where to start when I get her in the mail.

Brutal, $56 bucks for a f*cking junky .22LR mag with shipping......oh well this is the Canadian gun market :(
 
I plan to post a thread of the gun soon, once the re-finish is done.

Once you get the Promag, it will be really obvious what you need to remove when compared to the factory mag.

It is a lot of money, but I think you will be surprised with the quality of the Promag.

Edited my own post...

As suggested, the magazine catch on the promag spans it's entire width, but the JW-14's hasp doesn't accommodate it. The Promag also requires some material removed so it'll fit easily in the well. I could jam it in unsanded, but it was very tight.

Out of the stock, mine will feed. I still have to open inlet the stock around the mag-well.

The closer I look at these, the more I see a Squires Bingham model 20. I was sure I had a spare '20 magazine here, but can't find it to test.

Aye, I was going to do a complete good bad and ugly on them once I get the promag and see if I can get her to work.

It took a little messing around to figure out the strip and assembly! The "instructions" in that manual weren't much help lol

"For to disassemble, make pin through tip out first" :D

There is really little info on these rifles, a good review thread would be much appreciated by many I think.

Yes!

Got an apparently "top notch" marlin promag 25 rounder on the way in the mail.

Takes some light modification but they work awesome apparently. There is a video on youtube of a dude firing 25 rounds out of his rapid and it works fine.

Apparently the M70 mags almost drop right in ready to go :D

The thing that got me about the rifle is that it doesn't have that usual cheap chinese feel and look to it you know? It's well machined, beefy, solid, it's all steel, the only thing plastic on it is the trigger gaurd. It's a solid hefty old thing. They are so cheap price wise though, I'm going to beat the unholy sh*t out of this thing lol ;)
 
I just finished sanding a Promag Marlin 795 25 round, couldn't find the Champion mag anywhere so went with this more expensive one. Very solid and good quality mag this is. I got 2 from Hi-cal. com , awesome people. Still have to do the second one and fit the stock, and then I am ready to rock and roll. I wonder what speed loader fits these magazines?

Yes, the ones I got do. But the store has no more left. They are the Champion 25-round banana mags...clear plastic. I painted them black, as well I did a tiny amount of flat filing so the upper grey sides of the mag well wouldn't "squeeze" them and prevent the next round from popping into place. Not all rifles may require this. It worked without it too, but would occasionally fail to feed the next round, and this was why.

Folks. The SKU for 10 round JW14 mags at Canuck Tire is 93-2936-0. Just pick up a bunch in Sussex NB. Also 5 if them fit neatly in a USGI Molle grenade pouch staggered 2 down and 3 up.
