Hi, I want to buy my first shotgun and the Norinco JW2005 pump-action has me very intrigued, mainly because of price ($229 at marstar) and becaue it's based on the proven 870 platform. I've owned Norinco firearms and know they can be a little rough around the edges but aside from that I haven't been able to find diddly squat on the JW2005 online.

It has rifle sights and a fixed cylinder bore choke, will Remington barrels fit in case I want to get removable chokes? Am I better off just saving for a little while and getting the real deal?

Thanks.

(The only review I was able to find was in German, if anybody here can read German could you give me the gist of the article? College was way too long ago and mein Deutsch ist schlecht.)

With its rifle sights, this looks to be sporting either a copy of a 20" 'police' barrel, or may even be a rifled deer barrel for slug duty. I would first call / email them to check which it is. Either way, you are probably limited as to its uses because of this length / sights combo (unless you are looking for a slug gun specifically). If you want something longer for clays, you will have to shell out at least another $140 for a new 28" replacement, so get a suitable unit off the rack at less overall cost.

You may be able to squeak a used Winchester SXP under the $300 mark, but that will take some serious shopping and time. Dominion Arms / Grizzly make good pump guns for the $$, take pretty much all Remington parts, and more and more people prefer them to the brand new 870s in terms of quality. The H&R Pardner pump is also worth a look (another 870-type), but only if you can find one. The Maverick 88 by all accounts is a great starter shottie, and very much in the price range, yet personally I like the DA more. There is still no better way to go in your price ballpark than a vintage used Wingmaster, IMO.

For a 'shorty', many feature vendors here sell the DA / Grizzly 12.5" and 14" HP9, like CanadaAmmo, SFRC, WWSS, Wanstalls, Epps, and they tend to be in the $275-300 range.

A used Wingmaster would be a good option but priced higher than the Norinco's. The wingmaster is most likely the best pump gun ever made but there are other solid guns that can be had at a lesser cost.

The SXP is a solid shotgun. I would have never bought one, but after winning one at a DU event I am sold on this shotgun. The maverick is a hell of a steel as well.

I got one about 5 weeks ago. Took it all apart, cleaned it up, and polished inside the barrel and mag tub and made sure it cycled the rounds, which it did perfectly the 40 times I did it (also the sights were not aligned at all and had to take the rear sight off even to see the front).

The next day took it out to the range and it jammed on the very first round (winchester super X, low brass which is crappiest cheap rounds I could find). Round was stuck in the chamber and would not move at all, not even mortaring it would move it a millimeter. Got that round out after a while and some elbow grease and tried some Federal high brass, which also jammed. Remington... yup that jammed also. My guess is that there was something with the barrel that wasn't playing nice but i'll never know because on the next round.. well it went bang and the action went back so I thought sweet its working now... NOPE... my extractor broke in half sending the extractor spring and plunger somewhere down range. Took it all apart again to take a look and noticed that the welds on the right guide bar snapped and it was still inside the shotgun....

Took it in to my local gun shop and they took it off my hands (broken and all) and I picked up a new Hatsan MP for $150 after the difference. That's my little story for ya.

Just in case anyone comes upon this thread, I know its older but just want to point out because of the mag tube length these won't take a different barrel.
