Brother in law just bought one and was told to shoot .308 ammo and all would be fine but he read somewhere that he should shoot Nato rounds. I know nothing about these so any help is greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

Best bet is to check to make sure the barrel is properly indexed and check
The head space on it.you may be better off using 7.62x51 ammo...

The pressure limits of the two are about the same. But the gas pressure at the gas port can be very different and too much pressure will stress the oprod system.

This can be controlled by only shooting light (147 to 168gr) bullets when buying 308Win ammo..

What does it say on the left side of your Norc's receiver? Mine says "NORINCO M305 SEMI AUTO .308WIN." They may not all be the same.

Im curious as well, Ive done a lot of reading and what ive read from guys on the net and is that the 7.62 nato ammo isnt safe to shoot out of a .308 and vice versa due to headspacing... But Im definately interested to hear some more opinions on this just due to the fact you can buy bulk 7.62 a lot easier then bulk .308

Dont want to start an arguement here by any means but... if it was as simple as just shooting 7.62 in .308 guns and vice versa why is there so much controversy/topics about this?

The problem that occurs is usually with the Chamber dimensions between 762NATO and .308Winchester, and not the dimensions or pressure of either round!.

Rule of thumb IIRC and I ain't going to wiki anymore tonight:p is this but can be overridden with a reliable headspace check.

.308Win ammo in .308Win chamber, gtg.

762NATO military ammo in .308Win chamber, gtg.

.308Win ammo in 762NATO chamber, headspace more generous in NATO chamber meaning softer, thinner cased commercial .308Win brass may, just may, separate. Headspace check is your safety margin here.

This is what I remember reading, I have not shot any 7.62 out of my m14 yet, lol not brave enough yet hahaha

There was never a problem with ammo and chambers until the internet. pressure are the same. nato chambers can be sloppy.

Commercial brass can be softer and the extractor can pull through the head, leaving a case stuck i the chamber. A cleaning rod will tap it out. I have never seen it happen, but have heard about it. No big deal.
