Norinco M-14S head space questions

I'm not sure what my 2007 Norinco M-14S is chambered in. You see it say .308 Norinco rather than .308 Winchester or 7.62x51mm

I usually put .308 Winchester through it, and I've put 7.62 NATO through it and never had a single problem of any kind with the rifle.

However I'd -like- to feed it the correct ammunition. I'm hoping it's .308 Win simply because it's easier to find (I can't afford to buy bulk) heh.

Either way. I'd like to know if the head space is correct for one or the other, but I don't want to buy the bolt tool and thus I'm looking for head space gauges that have the little cut out.

Any help would be appreciated

It's a .308 Win. There's no such thing as .308 Norinco. Brownell's sells the headspace guages or just take it to a smithy.

yes I'm quite aware there is no .308 Norinco :p

However is it ACTUALLY .308 Win? or is it NATO?

Does Brownells even ship to Canada?

They can stamp whatever they want on the receiver, but that doesn't mean each and every rifle is headspaced the same. Mine seem to shoot either with no problem. 308 seems the most accurate, in mine, at least.

With milsurp I typically get a 2.5" (or more) group at 100 yards. With Federal 150's I get 1.5" at 100. Someone told me with his handloads, he gets 1" groups. I think this gun is fairly responsive to any refinements you can make in the ammo. Look at it this way, its the cheapest improvement you can make to the gun, if most of what it takes is simply developing a load it likes.

It'd cost me a few hundred grand ;) I'd have to move to a single family residence to re-load, and then actually learn how and buy equipment.

All Norincos M14 clones are chambered 7.62x51mm and not 308 win. In the old days this caused a problem in the US, as the chambers are not exactically the same. Some rifle that are within headspace spec on 7.62x51mm are out of spec (excessive head space) on 308 win. I understand this is not an issue with the current generation of Norinco M14cones and they should be within spec for both types of ammo.

That was due to soft bolts.
