so im wondering how many of these rifles on average need tweaking out of the box? i got one and it was perfect right out of the box, oprod tight headspace good... bla bla bla. now looking through the forums and it sounds like most of them need some tweaking. im seriously looking at getting one of those CanAm factory shorties but i dont want to spend hours and $$$ screwing with the thing to get it to shoot and function good, so how many are good out of the box like mine, would you say, like a percent? thanks in advance,

My shorty's op rod guide needed adjustment and staking. Sights are good. Initial accuracy with reloads is fantastic. I have about 1 hour invested in mine and it is an accurate little gun. Had it twice for deer but no luck yet.

Just took my shorty out of the box,gave it a quick wipe,and so far the safety seems a bit stiff,the trigger actually has a decent feel to it,it looks better than I expected....
 
I lubed and adjusted my rear sight. Shot a couple of bears and got a lot of smiles from happy shooters at my family reunion. I spend as much time tweaking my M305 as I do my Aerostar minivan; none. It works, I don't mess with it.
 
Lovin my shorty!

Has no weird tooling or marks, op rod true & guide tight, trigger breaks nice and crisp. gas lock was tightening at 5 o'clock so no need to shim.

First time out with it shot several 1.5"-2" 3 rnd groups @ 100m.

Was shooting the Chinese ammo from open sights, prone using sling and sand bag under front wrist, with gloves on(snow & cold here). So not ideal conditions.

I'm not a bad shot but i aint no 'scout sniper' so this rifle just shoots really sweet!
Went trough approx 50 rnd and no problems,consistant ejection pattern, it just thumped away like a champ!
I'd love to see what someone with real skillz and match ammo could do with it.

All I did when i got it was tear it right down, including the rear sight, but not the bolt or trig group(didn't want to go there just yet). I cleaned & greased everything and put it back together.

Had the front and rear sight centered for windage and it was bang on at 100m.
So everything appears put together real straight, nothing canted or out of line along sights ,reciever or barrel.

My only negative observation was the windage knob. It seems to always want to turn the little floating nut that is inside it, so it tightens or loosens the assembly if you turn it. Guess i'll just have to use 'Kentucky windage' holds then :D

My shorty has no significant issues. The sights seem okay and I can't find anything wrong with the action or gas system. 50 rounds downrange, and function was flawless. About the only thing that isn't quite right is the safety being very stiff...and that seems to be working itself out just by snapping it on and off. I'll be spending some time this weekend doing a detail strip and full cleaning and lube...good times!
 
Mine was kinda rough, but I'm pretty picky when it comes to my guns. I had some rough tooling marks and the OP rod guide was pretty loose. I had low expectations to begin with so it didn't bother me, plus I'm rebuilding mine from the ground up anyway. The one thing I can say is the barrel appears to be decent, chrome lining kicks ass!

Over all its a good deal for $450, you can't beat that.

... look at me, giving praise to a Norc, the sky must be falling. :p
 
I never HAD to tweak mine. Just wanted to to see if I could tighten my groups, as described on so many posts, without too much reliance on a benchrest.

I was successful, but there was certainly no necessity to undergo that little venture. :D
 
my canam shortys safety is EXTREMELY stiff. i'm currently watching tv flipping the safety off/on to get it to loosen up. also, the finish on my trigger guard is pretty rough, but its norc so you get what you pay for.

I just recieved mine from Can. Ammo looks way better than I expected, front sight straight,Op rod guide tight, front sight not too high, Gasblock tight, good finish. I just need someone to check my head space(Anyone in the Fraser Valley?) Stock to barreled action tight,
just tightened up the rear sight. Put a stud on the bottom for my Harris Bipod.
Ready for initial sight in but would like to have headspace checked, very nice arm. Yes my safety is also very stiff and am working it.

My Can-am shorty needed the barrell re-indexed. Since then I've put about 200 rds. downrange with no malfunctions at all. Shoots 2" groups at 100 yards with norinco ammo. Can't beat it for the price.
 
i am ex-army and shoot very tight groups while zeroing (the most important time) i will be picking up a shorty as soon as my redo is over on my PAL. (dont let 'em expire!) i owned an M1A years ago,but always wished her to be a mite shorter. reading the comments here is very encouraging. i know i'm new on here,but give the 168gr. HPBT's a try,i think you'll be surprised at the marked improvement to your already admirable group sizes.
