Hey guys. Might be a newb question but...

Just took delivery of a Norinco M14, and I noted that the front sight is really offset to the right. I wanted to move it to center and center the sights when I get to the range, so... I have the appropriate allen key so I removed the retaining screw and even with both thumbs I couldn't shift it in the flash hider's shoe. I looked at it and it has a bit of a scratch or something in the metal between the shoe and flash hider... am I #### outta luck moving this front sight post?

Shoot it as it sits, sometimes they're staked in for a reason such as an unindexed barrel.

If it's still off, give it a go with a hammer and punch, that should knock it from the staking and you can centre it.

That scratch was put in when they zeroed the rifle and could be causing extra grief to move the sight. I would try tapping it with a brass punch. One of my M305s was difficult yo move initially but after tapping it around with the brass punch it moves easily. Also you may want to back the sight screw out completely if you haven't done that.

Thanks guys! Yeah I had backed the sight screw out completely... I took the pic after replacing it. Thanks! Good to know... I'll check indexing too and have a go with a brass punch on it. Thanks lots.

If you only need to move it from side to side, a good tap with a brass punch and hammer should get it moving.
Sometimes the front sight base is not machined square on the flash hider, causing the sight to "lean" in one direction...if that's the case you'll be wanting a USGI or commercial flash hider (or a Norc one that's good) to replace the poorly machined one.

the front sight was staked for a reason. if you have access to a laser bore sight, verify. if not, I would shoot it first before moving it. only load from the magazine. no hand chambering. clean before shooting, there is a lot of factory grit in norcs. welcome to the addiction. the m14 platform is not for everyone. lots of good info on the net for "m14".

Try tapping a small flat bladed screwdriver in the slot. That will slightly spread the site easing removal or adjustment. If it doesn't move try it from the other side. The screw must be removed to remove the site from the flash hider
