Norinco M14 handguard

This is what I used when I first learned the feild strip of the M14s: h ttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZYqeyISsezo

Very helpful, but it doesn't help you much in the way of bolt re-installation when you have a scope mount :)

Remove the gas plug and loosen off the 8 shaped gas system nut. Slide the gas system forward and then you can slide the handguard off to the front without any tools or difficulty. You can take it right off even with a scope mount installed on the receiver as it slides forward, not up.

Pretty self explanatory if you've used snap ring pliers. It's a set of pliers with changeable pins on the end that you insert into the holes of a snap ring. You can use the pliers to compress or decompress ring and voila it comes off.
On the M14 you go from the underside of the field stripped rifle, insert the pins into the holes in the clip and pull them apart while pusing down gently. The pliers have to big enough to clear the barrel.
Kinda hard to explain without a picture but does that clear things up?

I see what your getting at. Please post a pic of the SR pliers. The set I picked up ended up being useless. Even for taking the clip off the guard.

To take the clip off the handguard. There is a high and a low side of the handguard clip. One tab (I think the op rod side) is slightly higher than the left side. One tab is also more square and has a tighter angle. Work on getting the other one off first.

To state the obvious, it is birds and the bees. Ehem. Stick your pointy end in the little hole. Squeeze and apply gentle pressure until things pop off the notches on the barrel.

Really? You ain't gonna get anything on this bad boy in that little hole!

grizzlypeg has it right. It`s the method I preffer.

you can also thread chicken wire/guitar string through the holes, tie one wire to something solid or put it in the vise and pull on the other.

the first tiem you want to remove it is the hardest (dried cosmo maybe?) I used my manly hand to hold it straight then put the combo tool over it and gently tapped the tool with a rubber mallet (dont wanna bend anything here)

at first you think you're not hitting hard enoguh cause it wont budge a bit, but repeated little hit will work it loose, at least it worked for me

Didn't work. Anyone have any other suggestions?

I just remove gas assembly just enough to slide the handguard down the barrel then remove. Found this way to be the easiest and also requires no tools.
