Norinco M14 help please Flash supressor crooked??

Hi Odd Shot. It is well lubricated. . .I think that the barrel is in line with the feed paths and magazine, not really sure what's causing the VERY difficult rack, but I am thinking I might try take it back today and see what the store says--after all I did buy two there. This one just seems a lot worse made then the first. . .there are even a bunch of hammer marks in the steel framing where the magazine slides in. Not expecting perfection for $500, but I do expect something that cycles fairly smoothly and has a relatively straight flash suppressor.

both of mine were very hard to rack at first too. they loosen up after racking the action a hundred times or so...it loosens up even faster after firing 20 or so rounds through it.

when you say that they're well lubed, you mean that you have grease on the op rod shaft and the op rod guide track, as well as on the underside of the bolt, the bolt roller and the track the bolt travels in, right?

also, when considering barrel alignment (index), 45ACPKING advises against regarding the feed ramps. Rather, look at the gas port on the underside of the barrel. Is it right at 6:00 and in line with the vertical axis of the receiver?

Look at the flash hider carefully: is it's vertical axis (i.e. where the 12:00 spline is inside the flash hider) perpendicular to the sight base?

On my first M305 (Norinco shorty), the sight base did form a right angle with vertical axis of the flash hider, but the front sight itself wasn't cut square (it was off quite a bit). In addition, the barrel wasn't screwed on tightly enough, causing it to be out of index with the receiver (it needed to be turned clockwise a bit more).

if your dissatisfied, I'd go back to the vendor and see if you can find one in better shape. I wasn't too excited about shipping the rifle back to BC from Ontario. Fortunately, Hungry was able to help me sort my rifle out, and now everything's all lined up.

Thanks for the help Katana. Under your recommendation I took it back to where I bought it and expressed my concerns. The guy wasn't too concerned about the crooked flash suppressor (and neither was I really--I could live with that) but when I mentioned the bolt being VERY hard to pull back he tried it several times and agreed (in fact he wasn't even able to rack it once on several of his half-strength attempts). I just asked kindly if I could exchange it for the one hanging on the wall (better then dealing with another one hidden in plastic and oil) and he gave me that one without any hassle. This second one was even more nicely finished then the first one I bought, so I am very pleased. First one had a grey finish on the steel and this one has a very deep black finish like the rest of the rifle. Incidentally the one that I returned had a grey finish as well. Action cycles very smoothly on this one, flash suppressor is almost straight with decently centred sights on top, and the feeding paths and other details seem to be up to what one would expect with a Chinese made m14.

Anyway my "#### is intact" again. . .lol

Cheers and thanks to everyone for the help. Now I have two of these things that I can shoot the hell out of!

Odd Shot, thanks for the photo and recommendations. . .as I wrote above I took it back and got another one. Your photo looks exactly like what mine did, like it wasn't tightened, and sights off to one side. I took the one I exchanged for to Katana for a once over and he thinks it's pretty good. . .gas ports aligned decently etc. Again, I don't expect perfection, but for $500 a little better then what I got the first time out no?

To answer your question, "yes" the bolt and underside etc., was very well lubed. . .my belief is that there were some issues with the bolt milled and fitted to the receiver--too much metal somewhere and it was hitting. The brass on the cartridges were getting dented when I forced the bolt back and the whole thing was quite concerning. I was seriously wondering if the the action would cycle when fired--I don't think it would have. Glad to get it out of my hands. . .things like that make you second guess purchases and just all around ruins your mood.

Anytime Seagonus. Let me know when your ready to knock off that FH ;) Maybe I'll have my barrel vise ready by that point and we can index your rifle too.

Odd Shot: Thanks for the link to your post on the same issue that I had. I found it useful to read through the thread. Glad you found a solution to your issue and glad I was able to exchange and not have to resort to seeking a solution right away!

On a side note. . .I looked over both rifles very carefully and the second one I got seems really good in comparison to the lemon I had in my hands just a few hours ago. . .in fact I am very eager to get the new one out to the range because it seems more aligned then the first one and the rear sights are actually working (now I know the other ones were not really working--no wonder I was having so much trouble dialing them in LOL!). The other one was shooting pretty bang on at 200 meters with sights "sort-of" working, so this one should shoot as well or better with what seems like better fit/finish and even straighter alignment. I will likely order one or two new sets of sights as per Hungry's recommendation in a PM, and the one that shoots less true will likely be scoped soon.

All in all I am happy with both purchases for the price. I learned an important lesson too--try not to buy something when you can't give it a "once over". I really like this platform and there seems to be a good community surrounding it. With 2 of these things I am now prepared for the zombie apocalypse. . .and if that doesn't come then I am prepared for a lot of fun at the range :p

Thanks again to everyone for all the comments and help.

that's good to hear, Seagonus.

I'm jealous you were able to just walk right into the store and exchange it.
I debated mailing mine back, but was able get it sorted out (albeit at a bit of an additional cost). I too am somewhat wary of online purchases now. Regardless, I am very much liking both of my new rifles.

If you don't mind me asking, what was the store you purchased them from? Also, what is the make of the second rifle? Is it a Polytech or Norinco? It's a short barrel (18.5"), right?
