Hi there,
New to this forum, just wondering how much modification can be done to a norico M-14... How much work has to go into it to make it to the same levewl as say an m1A1 socom?? I realise that quality wise the two are different. I was wondering if it is actually worth it to buy the norinco and try to mod it or is it better and cheaper to buy straight from Springfield? Thanks for the info.
 
Essentially you'd be looking at swapping the barrel, gaslock, and stock and handguard and adding the scout mount. And re-registering it as a restricted.

SOCoM is the one with the 16.5" barrel, right?
 
imho, the norinco recievers are better than the springfield ones (I have several of both). As for mods...sky's the limit:

Many of my chinese receiver based guns outshoot my stock springfields....

Been A while since I took my course, but what is the limit for non restricted in terms of barrel length? And what is a good internet site to buy from? Thanks again.

The sky is the limit, literally... Given time and money, you can really jazz these suckers up... IMHO, the bare minimum that every Norinco M14 has to have is... A NEW STOCK... The one that comes with the rifle is crap...

Thanks again for the info... So have any of you guys attempted to make the SOCOM model and keep the barrel length non restricted? That would be my goal.... And I would still be alright with an 18.5 inch barrel? Also if you guys could point out some good sights to buy mods from and of course a gumsmithing for dummies website. Thanks...
 
"...an 18.5 inch barrel..." Will give you an enormous muzzle flash and noise. The .308 was designed for a 22" barrel. You lose about 100fps per inch of barrel below 22".
Barrel changing requires special tools that are rather expensive to buy for a one time build. Fitting the barrel requires skills you won't get from an internet site. Mind you, you can have a smithy put the barrel on and do the rest yourself.
"...cheaper to buy straight from Springfield..." M1A's run about 2 grand. M305's, if you can find one, run about $400 BNIB. It's not math. It's arithmetic.
 
You can have the barrel cut, crowned and threaded for $75 - $100. Keep the barrel abouve 18.5" and it's not restricted. You would need a Navy-type sight if cutting off the barrel. another $100 or so. As far as rebarreling, if you need to, a lot of people here have the tools and are willing to help.

as for the BOOOOOOM!!! it'll wake everyone up at the range....mond you I still find an M4 type with a short bbl is worse.
