Norinco M14 rear sight aperture size.

Was wondering about that myself; I have a shorty on the way, and my other regular length norc had a tiny aperature too. I opened that one up with a drill and it worked MUCH better. Just don't go too big all at once - open it up with a bit that is just slightly bigger than the aperature and this should be good enough to get a clearer sight picture.

On a simular note, how the hell do you take the sight apart?

You have to remove the windage / elevation dial shaft to be able to pull the sight. You loosen the tension nut on the right hand side, and unscrew the shaft from the windage knob by turning the elevation dial and the shaft counter clockwise, then pulling it out. You don't loosen the slotted screw on the elevation dial at this time. It allows the elevation knob to slip on the shaft, which you don't want while taking it apart. You don' remove the captured nut on the right hand side either. It has a wire ring spring around it to keep it in a groove.

First step in sight removal is to move the sights all the way to the left as you are looking from the butt end of the rifle. Then undo the screw on the windage knob all the way. Pull out the windage pinion and then the elevation pinion and knob will come off too.Remove the aperature and then pop off the base and cover by prying up at the rear center of the cover.
