Norinco M14 Rebuild & Face Lift From The Ground Up... [Project Complete - 01/23/2012]

Hey 50calshooter,

Beautiful rifle, really nice! Disclosure: I intend to base a future build on your process and parts list!

Just a question for you, or anyone else that might care to respond, regarding the sanding of the finish and smoothing down the rough machining and edges prior to refinishing...

Is this something a relative amateur (I own a few M305s and know my way around them to some extent) with good judgement can do without risk of damage to the receiver? did you sand any of the internal surfaces of the receiver (i.e. camming surfaces/ raceways) or just the outside parts/edges? could you take second and elaborate slightly on the process? this would be most appreciated!

If anyone else has any input it would be very welcome.

I never sanded any internals, only the exterior. I did sand a little near the rear of the track, it was alittle sloppy in there and I just did a little re-shaping. Any where the op rod rides on or where the bolt rides on I did not touch.

Just keep it simple this is purely cosmetic, just keep that in mind.

Good luck,

Thanks for the reply! Ordering various parts now.

i read somewhere that the receivers are heat treated to a certain hardness(Rockwell) . actually to a very hard ass metal. to sand or file the receiver you have to heat treat it to get a softer metal to work on. once done sanding or filing you can heat treat it back to w.e (Rockwell) it was before, costly refinishing process but if you have the money go for it otherwise your gonna spend hours of sanding because the metal is hard.

but great job on the refinishing job

Update... Sort of

I was able to get to a range this weekend...

I got the bolt put back together and went to the Calgary Shooting Centre to test fire it. Couldn't do much of a range report on her because I was only able to shoot at 25 yards, but it did function beautifully and the rounds on target did group nicely.

First impressions after shooting it, what a tank! Just a powerhouse of a rifle and the recoil surprisingly wasn't bad at all compared to a 308 bolt gun. Seems like the Op Rod Spring absorbs alot of the recoil, very nice to shoot! I'm in love, hopefully it'll warm up here and I can find the time to really stretch her legs. But for now, so far so good!

50calshooter. I didn't read the entire 12 pages to see if you already posted this. But, can you give a list of dealers you bought your parts from for this project?

Sure but not much of a list...

Brownells

Oh I sourced the stock from a nice American fellow on M14.com

If you go to Brownells and use the schematic section for the Springfield M1A it will break down every part and it makes it super easy to select what you need...
