A friend of mine is selling a Norinco M14 and I need a bit of info before I buy it...like the year it was made and possibly the importer

on the left side of the reciver it is stamped as follows:

M14 .308
CJA SFLD MICH
Norinco Made in China
200912XX

any help would be great

Sort of, but the older ones were supposedly made with real surplus parts.

i'd take that with a WHOLE HEAP of salt- 1) what surplus parts?- remember , the usa and communist china were not the best"friends" - the trade of arms parts would be highly unlikely.
ie the parts being usgi parts
2) the tooling was sold and exported to tiawan, which again , is not on the best of terms with communist china
unlikely to export parts to china
that leaves viet nam, which DID supply rifles to china, ( us and vietnamese drop and runs) but it's been some 40 odd years since the war, and the big turn-in was 64-67 for us forces, then they were seconded to arvn - even then they were somewhat scarce with the garand, m1 carbine, thompsonm and m16 being more common
even my old norc, which is an 89 model( under 300 ) serial number has all CHINESE parts
at best, the chinese held m14 parts would have been used as prototypes for the norcs
however, if you want to talk springfield m1as, then the legend is true- the m1a DID use usgi parts until the system dried up, then made their own- these are a premium in the us

Maybe not true USGI parts on a Norinco, but some pretty close reverse copies. I have seen receivers where there are grind marks that "suggest" there was once a full auto lug, and sears with a little tab like the go-fast ones.

On the other hand, Springfield Armory Inc, once had large stocks of old gubmint ordered parts. These have been completely exhausted and they are now using new parts made by whoever wants the contract bad enough.
