Norinco m14... worth it or not?

I'm contemplating buying an m14 and was wondering if their really worth it or not. from what I've read they seem fairly decent but if anyone could help me decide, it would be appreciated. Can anyone give me a $$ amount in regards to what parts should be replaced with USGI pieces and what not in order to make it the type of gun that you know wont give you any major issues. I would like it to be the type of firearm you can be happy about purchasing and that will give you a lifetime of faithful service, is that possible with an
m14?
 
They are good to go right out of the box. Modifying them is hobby not a necessity much like reloading, collecting guns, booze and whores!

Just get one! You'll love it and your #### won't fall off!
 
If you don't get all parts replaced with USGI goodies, yer #### will :eek: fall off! :D

Nah... I'm just joking. Tighten things up at one of my clinics and you will surprise yourself with this $ 400 plus high school shop class project! :) Even better, wait until you shoot handloaded match boolits! :cool:

For $450 you can't go wrong. I put 1100 rounds through mine this year, she is a pig to feed, but fun to shoot. Of all my firearms the one people want to try their first time is the M14.
 
I bought one a little over a year ago, sent it to get it accurized, and when I got her back it was a little beauty. Shot close enough to MOA with factory loads and worked fairly reliably.

All in all though, the gun did not suit me, so I sold it in favor of some other projects, but I would highly recommend the Norc M14 to anybody looking to break into the 308 semi world.
 
I did nothing but rattle can mine od green and file off the sharp bits and I'm very happy with it. For the price they are great and if you do t like it you can sell them without much loss(or double your money in the EE ;) )
 
If you are unsure, attend a clinic and find out first hand whether one is for you. I had a rifle backordered and attended my first clinic before it arrived - now I own two of these babies! (Hungary has it right - #### detachment prevention)
 
For $450 you really can't go wrong. It's accurate enough for hunting (although I think it's a tad heavy if you walk and stalk), reliable, fun to shoot, and is easily upgraded should you feel the need to spend money and keep the economy afloat!!! :D
 
They are a great bargain really (except for the cost of ammo and a good scope mount :( ) .... but I ended up buying 3 of them and spending way too much money and time on them...lol only becuase I really like the rifle .
Out of the box they are more than adequate for a battle rifle and are very reliable and if you want .. changing all the parts on them to get it just the way you like it is half the fun .I really like the new Shorty I received from CanAm the finish was pretty good really.
If you are lucky enough you might even get one with good rear sights on it..lol .
Try and attend a clinic if you can as they are a great source of info.
Get a new op rod spring guide and if you are planning on using just the iron sights get a set of rear sights off a Garand and you will be good to go.
 
WOw thanks for all the imput dudes! what does accurized mean? im still a bit of a noob to guns but my collection is growing rather fast and im into firearms that are economically feasible, hence the m14 interest! good to hear their reliable, after all the reading about broken bolts and other malfunctions im glad to hear their not all bad! Not trying to threadjack, but I've also been contemplating an m14 purchase for quite some time now. I'm looking to use it as a deer/range rifle, and I've always loved the look and style of it, would make a pretty nice SHTF rifle as well :). This was my first year at my family's deer camp, and I brought my SKS. While I love my SKS, there was a few things I wasn't particularily fond of. The fixed mag is kind of a pain, everytime I needed to move from spot to spot and cross a road, dropping the rounds and fumbling around with gloves/cold hands was kind of annoying. It was fairly heavy (9 lbs +/-). The caliber is only really found at gunstores, it would be nice to be able to walk into any walmart or CT and find what I need. And while I felt the 7.62x39 was adequate within 100 yards (most shots would be much less than that), there are a few gravel/sand pits where some longer shots could be taken, and I would like a round that would get me there humanely (plus I could bring up a bear tag this year).

I could deal with the extra pound or so the m14 is going to weigh over the SKS, in exchange for a detachable magazine, more power, more range, and most likely better accuracy, but I really just want to make sure it is as reliable. I've had the SKS completely soaked, beaten up, fed less-than-ideal surplus, etc. and it goes bang everytime. Can I expect the same reliability from the Norc M14?

Also I know much of the modifications people do are to improve accuracy, are there any modifications that are recommended for long term durability/reliability?
 
Not many shops sell accurized or shortened rifles. Buy the canam factory shorty and save the expense of having the barrel chopped..
