Norinco m14 would not pick up second round or lock bolt back on empty magazine

I have a few questions for you if you don't mind.

I just recently bought a norinco m14 rilfe. I've had a new krieger medium weight barrel put on it. When I got the rifle back I put on a USGI gas cylinder and gas plug, but I'm still using the Norinco barrel band and gas plug. I should add that I never shot this rifle before the new krieger barrel was installed. I went out yesterday to break in the barrel and sight it in. The rifle, with both the 5 round and 10 round norinco magazine, would have trouble the odd time feeding the first round when I put a fresh magazine in. I would pull the the charging handle back as normal and let it go with full force and it would not always feed the first round in. I would have to pull the charging handle back a liitle and let it go. Then it would feed the round in. The gun fires fine, but, the bolt doesn't lock open on the empty magazine, nor doe it pic up the next round. It spits the spent brass out but not very far, compared to my other M1A I had years ago. I tried a new Sadlak NM spring guide and spring, and also the norinco spring guide and spring. Both had the same result I'm describing. What is going on? Is it a magazine issue? It seems to be short stroking on every shot. The barrel has already produced some good groups, but the gun is not feeding properly. Any help you can suggest would be greatly appreciated. You come highly recommended. I should add that when I installed the new gas cylinder I made sure that all the gas ports where lined up. I did this with a flashlight and a small allen key, which I measured that it poked right into the barrel. Also, the bolt and op rod travel freely when the spring is out, so it appears to move smoothly back and forth.

Help!Thanks!

u should have a usgi or american spec gas piston in ur gas cylinder since they are not same size. On the fat barrels they can rub on bottom of barrel so maybe oprod guide is slightly off causing it slow down the action also a lil grease there does wonders. Also is it a usgi or american spec oprod guide cause its highly recommended. I had same issue when I first got my Krieger

Yes I'm suspect of the norinco gas piston in the GI cylinder. The op rod guide is a springfield so it's not a norinco. And with the tilt tes it appears to slide pretty freely

When these rifles fire , eject, but fail to pick up next round or not lock open, this is called a "short stroke"
First thing to suspect is the gas system.
Using a norinco piston in a GI type gas system could very well be the problem. It's also highly likely that using a chinese piston will damage the inside walls of the cylinder as the chinese pistons are over size in diameter.

Another common short stroke cause is when the plug and cylinder get loaded with carbon after time and 100's of rounds.

Also it would be prudent to check for other causes that could be slowing the action down , like a slight bind in bolt or oprod , poor trigger group seating angle affecting magazine, oprod binding on stock somewhere ect.

But, with what you describe and the mix matched gas system parts, I'd be addressing that issue prior to firing again

Od of the piston should be 0.497 IIRC the norinco ones are more like 0.5. The I'd of US spec cylinder is 0.5

When I changed my cylinder I put my piston in my lathe and hit it with some 400 emery cloth. Then used some polishing compound to make it schmooge.

Lock back the bolt flip the gun muzzle down, you should hear the piston move. Rotate it 180 you should hear it again. Its not an immediate klunk...more of a little swoosh and then a klunk
