I just bought a Norinco M14s and had a chance to take it to the range last night but the thing kept jamming. Well Jamming might not be the right word for it. It would eject the spent casing fine but it wouldn't grab another one from the mag. Also when the mag was empty the bolt wasn't locking open.

Could this be caused by the bolt not sliding all the way back? Possible adjustments? Its brand new so is it possible I just need to pull the thing apart and properly lubricate it?

sounds like your mag isn't seated properly- it should "clunk" into place- or a bad mag-posibbly follower or spring problem-short stroking is not where i would go right off unless you're using some kind of handload- typically, the bolt comes forward like an express train and will pick up anything in the mag-the only other thing is that some cosmoline is slowing the bolt down and a good cleaning and oiling will fix that

It sounds to be short-stroking. Can be caused by:
- underpowered ammunition
- low gas volume (undersized/blocked gas port)
- too much friction in the mechanism ( improper lube, rough or sharp surfaces because it is new).

The ammo or the excessive friction are the most likely culprits.

to me the hold open is the key indicator.

when I've had these problems it is either one of two things.
1) not enough gas... (who knew someone would accuse anyone of that.)

2) or mag not set propper. are you using USGI mags or are you using some cheap knock off? With one exception, I've had nothing but problems with knock offs. I bought a bunch of PROMAG's from the states and they work well, had to give them a bit of a tune up with a hammer and anvil to match my USGI ones (just a bit out of spec on the bullet end of the mag. One good whap and a few measurements and I've never had a problem. but pretty well all the others just gave me nothing but grief. Improper bullet retention angles to top catch would cause drag and sometimes the front lip would be too high and neck would get hungup on the enterance to the chamber and the bullet would get pinched.... on and on and on.

hope that helps!

It will load a round fine when hand cycled(which has to be done after each firing). Once out of 10-15 rounds it will properly grab the next one from the mag.

I have to take the whole thing apart next week to swap the stock out so I'll lube it up then. I'm just using some old ammunition that the store had laying around so that might also be the culprit.

The tips and hints thread said you should only oil a few parts and grease the rest. What should I be looking for when buying grease? Any brands you guys are partial to?

[EDIT] I'm using the mags that came with it.

not necessairly- i've got a couple that will feed first round ( they're real m14s) without the back end being thouroughly latched- you have to shove that mag in there like you mean it and give it a good whump at the back to make sure the latch engages- they're just stiff, that's all- you can really notice it with those 5 round shorty mags as there isn't anything to grip with and we're talking about less than a 1'4 inch drop- basically, the 5 rounder can pop out of latch and you can't see it- first thing i'd do is ck that and get some good 5/20mags out of marstar
as far as lubing goes , it's good old white LITHIUM for everything

If the mag was improperly seated it would also have trouble feeding a round when cycled by hand to load the first cartridge.

One "issue" that I found with this one is that when you hand cycle the mag doesn't get pushed down on all that hard because your forward speed doesn't cause deflection, but when the gun cycles uber fast it causes the magazine to "bounce down" against the catches and if there is too much movement you get a feeding jam. I.E, tolerances on the mag catches suck.

never rocked with them

Are the Marstar mags decent or are they the same that come with the M305?

Never rocked with them, but a bunch of my friends have. Some jam some don't. I've heard lots of swearing from guys that don't usually cuss. But then some guys don't have a problem, probably more of a mating issue then an actual mag issue. I do know that a bunch are using pro-mags or USGI/springfield mags and they don't have problems anymore. BUT they aren't cheap. Guess you have to ask yourself are you going to the range to de-stress:dancingbanana: or stress up?:bangHead:

ha. Cheers.

lube? I lube my m-14 actions with Brake Free (SP?) for auto guns. I do know your are not supposed to oil the gas piston. You can grease the o-rings with a bit of lith-white.

I had a similar problem. We had to file the connector rectangle near the top of the mags so it would fit properly, then the problem went away. It's likely a mag fit issue. Just get the mags to fit. Once they are solidly in, there will be no feeding problems.

break-free- it's a cleaner, lubricator and preservative- but all you really need is good old white lith or wheel bearing lube, both are available from tire in tubs for dead cheap- there are no o-rings in the m14- no rubber of any kind- the closest thing is the bolt roller, and that you grease

It sounds like the same problem I had. It turned out to be the op rod spring, was to stiff. I changed it with a usgi spring, problem solved. I also thought it was a mag problem.

I had the exact same problem. It turns out the gas nut on mine came loose. check to see if that's the problem. I have heard it's common on m14s
