hi. i've got what looks like a casting flaw in my gas cylinder. almost looks like a crack of some sort. wondering if this is normal for a norinco m305? i don't have enough posts to link images yet, but have a post up on the m14 forum with a pic if that would help. thanks.

short answer.... we can't diagnose a problem without pics unfortunately.

My advice. get a magnifying glass and look at the supposed crack. If it still looks like a crack then t probably is.
I have seen this before but only once so I can't say it is common or "normal" for norinco.
that said, the last 5 years of Chinese M14 type rifles have seen quality go way down and cast components of very poor quality.
In regards to the crack , if it is a crack, when in doubt... err on the side of safety and set that component aside and install one of known quality.

well, i'm working on my post count so that i can link to pics. i'd crosspost to the m14forum where i am able to get a pic up but uncertain what the mods would think of that. just got access to EE so i anticipate spending spree/exponential post count increase in the near future ...

it looks like a crack but doesn't extend into the part. so far rifle runs and goes bang like it should (other than occasionally trying to smack me in the face with spent brass). if i knew i were keeping it for more than 2 years i'd invest in a unitized gas cylinder assembly and be done with it. my understanding is that a usgi gas cylinder requires usgi gas plug and piston as well?
