Norinco M305 horribly innacurate... Basic low budget accurizing? Suggestions?

Run it with the gas switched off, that may give you a better idea of how it will perform once you get everything tightened up and a new op rod spring guide.

How does one switch off the gas? Do you just pull out the piston? The piston rod is "D" shaped and can't go in upside down. Doesn't have an external switch like my T97 either..

Anyone know where I can get some shims? Marstar is sold out. Based on the fact that my front sights are both canted to the left, I'm thinking this is the first step required for me. That said, I don't mind spending the nominal amount on money on an upgraded spring guide.

Contact Tactical Teacher (Hungry) on here for the shims...but those wont help your canted front sight.
That is due to the barrel out of index or the front sight may even be milled at an angle.
Get an upgraded op rod for the first improvement.

Shims will not do anything to aid your canted front sight. Shims aid in tightening the gas block. PM/Email Barney aka TacticalTeacher (previously Hungry).

What's the consensus for fixing a canted front sight ? In the past I've suggested removal of front sight and flash hider and replacement but what do you think ? While not a new problem it seem more common with the 2013's than in previous models.

If it is causing the op rod to bind it has to be indexed no matter what .But if it doesn't cuase that and you are putting on a scope you don't have to .
Cutting a 22 in barrel down and rethreading it is not very expensive. I just had one done at Ellwoods.
Indexing the barrel to straighten the front sight and align the op rod is easy if you have a barrel vice.

I definitely do NOT have a barrel vice. But I DO intend to install a SHG and an Aimpoint PRO. So I gather it's a bit of a moot point.

That said, I'd still like to have my rifle be as sound as possible for a reasonable price, notwithstanding it's oriental origins.

Upon further inspection, it seems as though my gas lack ring is not machined properly. As best I can tell, the front sight post isn't at the vertical. I think?

Are there replacement rings that can be purchased to remedy this?

So I had my M305 out sunday and my best 5 shot grouping was 3" at 100 yards (prone supported). Not bad for using the cheap 145gn 7.62x51 Norc ammo. It will be interesting to see what different weights/better quality ammo can do. Perfectly happy with it now and looking forward to getting into the next M14 clinic!

I was showing my buddy the pics of it in its new Boyd's stock when our RSM came over to check it out. He said he just got his LRB recently and I said, "I'm jealous, wish I could afford one of those."
He said, "I wish I could afford it, too!" LOL

Joe - Other inexpensive things to try would be to bed the action (paying some attention to front band tension), and most especially reloading (match grade ammo at the cost of bulk Norc).

Glad this turned out well for you. I really enjoy my M305 even if it doesn't shoot like a bolt.

Regards this, me say; 110$ replacement cost is worth it for the stock flash hider and its canted front sight issues. 25%the price of the gun, a beauty front sight = priceless. Make sure it includes the grub screw that locks the castle nut (that holds the FH on), and try to get its front sight. there are tools to ease installation, but these can be improvised.

My 2007 M14s, this was its only issue, and side by side, the stock FH was 90% POS. best thing I did was replace it.

Also I'd like to add that I get about the same group size (3"@100yds, Norc ammo, a 'bit' tighter using handloads) so affordably that's about what to expect, concur?

Take it to one of Barneys clinics.... Its a good deal, a good time.... and hell, you even learn stuff...

So that brings us back to the question about clinics. When will there be another clinic in Central Alberta?

My front sight was definitely terribly machined, I just replaced it with a 20$ front sight and 2$ set screw from Brownells. My sight picture is no longer canted

Also replaced the rear sight aperture for 12
