actually, its an M-14S (M305) Norinco "GI rifle"

So people aren't wrong when they call them M14. The "s" is not pronounced, its one of those special words.

:D

What would you call it then? The firearm design of these battle rifles all stem from the U.S. M14 rifle. So what if there are different companys manufacturing them, its still the "M14" platform.

If your argument is along the lines of M16 vs AR15, The AR is the platform and the M16 is a U.S. specific build on that platform. So ya, calling your AR build an M16 isn't really correct (Its your rifle though, call it what you like)
But in the case of the M14, The M14 IS the system and the U.S. happened to use it and designate it... So your M1A/M305/M14s etc, are all non-selective variants of an M14 rifle.

(At the range) Excuse me sir, I couldn't help noticing the nice paint job on the 'non-selective variant of an M14 rifle' your shooting today, what kind of paint did you use?

Meh, whatever.

Why do you call your M305's an M14? It's not an M14!
It's a clone of an American made SPRINGFIELD ARMORY M1A! Even the M1A doesn't have a selector switch like the M14. I don't call my SA M1A STANDARD AN M14.
Norinco doesn't even come close to the real thing!
If you don't own an M14, don't call it one.

When the new hummer (now made in china) will hit the market, THEY WILL call it a hummer. Brace yourself.

BTW: I support your opinion, but we are invaded (norinco)...
I forgot: you just offended a lot of people, prepare for a s**tstorm!

even the very EARLY noricos which are unmarked were even more FAITHFUL copies of the m14- i have one that was converted from the f/a version by milling off the fire control group tab- you can still see the grind marks-done at the norinco plant- the 305 designation didn't come until much later THESE ARE NOT CLONES OF THE M1A as the take down slot is in the middle of the rail , just like the m14- these were reverse engineered copies of captured us m14s from viet nam- and were supposed to supplied to phillipine guierllas- the deal fell though, and that's how we got the modified m14s
incidentally i can call either way, as there's three real ones sitting in my safe- a springfield( not the m1a) armory, an h&r, and a trw- and im a 12( 3)

Funny my M14S is stamped M14 right on the reciever. If it was a clone of a M1A wouldn't it say so?

Also wasn't the M305/M14S built before the M1A?

sorry, the m1a dates back to about 1970 or so as springfield armory - the government sprirngfield armory closed about 68- the company owned version then had to get a batf approved form of the rifle which was not f/a capable and get the name registered- took about 2 years before they were up and running as a company- springfield armory of texas, i believe at first

Who the #### are you?

It just so happens that my M14S has M14S stamped into the metal.
