What would you call it then? The firearm design of these battle rifles all stem from the U.S. M14 rifle. So what if there are different companys manufacturing them, its still the "M14" platform.
If your argument is along the lines of M16 vs AR15, The AR is the platform and the M16 is a U.S. specific build on that platform. So ya, calling your AR build an M16 isn't really correct (Its your rifle though, call it what you like)
But in the case of the M14, The M14 IS the system and the U.S. happened to use it and designate it... So your M1A/M305/M14s etc, are all non-selective variants of an M14 rifle.
(At the range) Excuse me sir, I couldn't help noticing the nice paint job on the 'non-selective variant of an M14 rifle' your shooting today, what kind of paint did you use?
Meh, whatever.
