Hi,

I'm looking to pull the trigger on an M305 but have been very hesitant since hearing horror stories of barrels falling of, mags/mag catches out of spec not locking into the rifle, poor indexing, and a crap rear sight. Have these issues been resolved? Canada Ammo has a shorty I'm interested in, any problems with these? Any insight would be great.

I bought a shorty. I fired it, still have my di*k and nothingelse has fallen off me OR my norc.

I recommend canadaammo.com if you go for it. Just do it.

Sign up for a clinic first and then buy an m305. It's the latest batch of m305's that have the barrels flying off, tight magazines, and bayo lugs that don't fit bayonets. If you buy one of these, you can go to a clinic and find all the problems and fix them up before shooting. If you like to tinker, the 2007 batch has the best finish and accuracy but seems to have the most issues. Turns out they're easily fixed, so try to get your hands on one of those.

The downside is there IS the rare occasional problem with these.

The upside is whatever problem you MIGHT find, is easily correctable either by way of dealer response, or help/suggestions from these forums.

The upside is these Chinese M-14's are strong and properly built where it counts (functional tolerances). Sure they aren't pretty, but if you have the patience, you CAN make them pretty too.

The upside is the price.

The upside is parts from US Military M-14's fit just perfect. Same for Springfield M1A parts, or any other American parts maker doing National Match or regular M1A/M-14's.

The upside is if you decide you don't like it, you aren't out of pocket much.

The upside is you can sell it to someone else very quick. They are popular in this country.

The downside is you're likely to keep it...and become addicted to shooting lots of money...er, I mean ammo, through it!

The upside is you'll have a cool rifle, that's both "old school" yet still modern enough that it's been brought BACK into service with the US servicemen in battle.

The upside is you can either scope it real good, or benefit from the very best iron sight systems ever put on a common rifle. Once it's zeroed, you just "dial a distance" and you should be "on".

Go for it! I had some minor issues that needed attention but the cool factor comes from the fact of how much you will learn along the way. The guys on this board are really great and will have yer back if you ever need any help.

BTW, playing with the Chinese M14s is cats ass.

DONT buy one ....got mine last week cleaned it, lubed it, took it to the range and fired 1/2 the first crate of ammo off ...I see that Canammo has combo's up again this week and now i have a shorty comeing .........what the hell ..

...LOL you cant go wrong even if you have minor issues

Its the most shooting fun i have had in years

Get it. They are like anything else ya buy.nothings perfect, the fun comes with tweaking.
But you will , without a doubt get hooked and throw a crap load of money down range.
Get it and shoot it :))

Hi,
Have these issues been resolved?

The short answer is no. I have not heard or seen anything to report that the many minor issues and occasional major issue with the Chinese M14s have gone away.

That being said, I would never discourage anyone who knows how to twist a screwdriver from buying one. They may need some minor adjustments, and some have gone back to the importer to be replaced, but once this is done the purchaser will end up with a fine rifle at an excellent price.

If you don't have the skill or desire to twist a screwdriver, you should look elsewhere.

I bought my M305 off a guy in Edmonton for $350. I don't think I've ever liked a rifle so much as this one! The gun will shoot 2" groups at 100 meters all day with the iron sights that I modified. Headspace is not very good though.. I might experiment with forming 30-06 to .308. i figure I can get the shoulder to the perfect dimensions to correct the headspace> sure a lot of work, but it's more of a hobby for me them anything. I was able to shoot 3/4" groups at 100 with an arms 18 mount that i was recently playing with. There's nothing sweeter then semi auto fire power and accuracy to boot! I'd love to own an american version, but this rifle is sweet for the price paid.

I'm lovin' mine!
Had an H&R M14 that the Gov't said I couldn't own so I traded it for a Norinco M305...
Put a Springfield Muzzle Brake on it and now a new camo stock from a local gun shop and a Barska 3-9*40mm scope and havin' a blast!

By the way got a black synthetic stock and hand guard for sale... ;-)

As Hungry would say......

"Don't buy one, buy TWO (or your di*k might fall off :D:D:D).

Any "issues" that might crop up with the Norc's are easily fixed, and there are clinics that Hungry and M14Doctor (both CGN members and experts on the M14/M305 platform) put on to show you HOW to fix these little things.

I had M14Doctor convert a 2009 M305 into a shorty (just before CanadaAmmo came out with their shorty version) and that rifle is just plain FUN!!!! (he did some trigger work and a little bit of accurizing work too - it's used as my short-range bush pushing hunting rifle and fun shooter).

Don't buy that shorty because I am gonna buy them for my buddies here in Ontario. For the money, who gives a poop? Many years from now you will regret not buying them

My M305 Shorty [from CanadaAmmo] ran great right out of the box. If you have the slightest interest in shooting this kind of rifle, you'd be crazy not to buy one...or two. Canam is more than happy to help you out if you do run into any real problems.

The issues are pretty minor. But, what'd you expect for $450...a handcrafted precise match rifle?

The next rifle up would be an Springfield M1A for about $2,000 or so. I put about $500 into mine and total cost was still half of a new one...and I have some mean a$$ quality parts in that baby. As many have stated in the past, I now know that the receivers are supurb to the Springfield.

They will shoot great right out of the box. As for the sights, well they will work, just not as smooth as the USGI. But again, what'd you expect for $450?

Lookit the "economy" rifles.....loaded with plastic and cheaper machined CNC parts. That is what you are buying folks.

I love it! And I love mine! :D

Bought a new M305. Did barrel break in. Now, I load, I aim, I shoot, ... mag empty, I reload, aim, shoot... Mag empty, etc.... All my body parts intact and handloads shooting 1.5 MOA on a good day. No issues, no horror stories... just plain fun, good shootin'.
