Norinco M305 Questions/Recommendations

years ago that lazerus2000 clown made a folder out of a rem 870 side folder unit and a Chu wood stock.... then when the guy he built it for fell while hunting (i think it was) the chu wood stock promptly failed miserably.
not to give you advice where you may not want it..... but I would opt for a real hardwood stock or get one of the chinese plastic stocks. Once you cut the back off one of those plastic ones, it's like the opening left behind was almost made to fit the buttstock adaptor modification. Using that chu wood for a mod like this could end up causing injury.

I miss him. :)

I sure don't..... he befriended me and my wife and immersed himself in a personal relationship with us outside of CGN. Crashed at my place every time he came over from the island to the mainland. Stole product development ideas from me all the while claiming he wanted no part of the m14 as a business. Emailed and private messaged a crimminal record report for a person sharing my name but a decade older..... and passed it off to business associates and members of forums claiming it was my crimminal record.....
hmmmm what else..... LOL and yes.... I have proof of it all.
Lied to and manipulated this entire community and got banned for being a loser loudmouth schmuck LOL

good riddance.
trust nothing that guy says.

Much like Sunray he added a bit of colour to this place ;)

Statik, I wouldn't recommend the M305 as a beginner rifle, especially if you do not like tinkering.
It is a "diamond in the rough" that more often than not requires a knack for tinkering and knowledge of the rifle and what is required to "get it in shape" (or at least a visit to one of Tactical Teacher's M305/M14 clinics). I love both of mine, but there were times (briefly) when I hated them.

It is not as accurate as a bolt action rifle. My new shooter friend with a Savage bolt action was shooting MOA/sub-MOA at 100m within a summer (bench rest)

People who love it, love it for the fact that it is an M14 pattern rifle with a forged receiver that they purchased for $500 or less (vs. $1500 for a bone stock Springfield M1A).
Both of my M305s were purchased for about $500 each, years ago.
The price has gone up considerable since then.

I would suggest purchasing a used M305 from a credible forum member that has already been worked on.
M14 Medic on the board sold M305 rifles in the past, listed on his website. Another option is to buy one and send it to him to be worked on.

I didn't know any of that. Very sad. Can't say I was ever much a fan of 'ol "Laz".

That bad, eh? I'd heard it could split, but I wasn't expecting something that dramatic.

Thanks very much- I still have the black plastic one, I can give that a try. Can't give those things away these days anyway.

there's an awesome thread here on doing the mod with the plastic stock , pages n pages if the pics are still there. I've purged the internet of my pics but others are still there.

here it is ----> https://www.canadiangunnutz.com/for...nd-a-DIY-Mod-Stock-walk-through?highlight=diy

I just subscribed to that thread- thanks for bumping it, as I as was going to search for it.

I was hoping to not use the Norc stock because of it's flexibility, but I can't resist giving it a try.

I suspect that in the end I'll buy a Boyd's, but this is worth a shot.

If you've got the money to spend it's a fun gun. I've shot it at the range once, you get what you pay for... Rough finish, feels cheap... But it shoots fairly consistently! $500-$700 for a M14 knockoff isn't bad, especially with the smaller caliber. If you've got the money to spend on "fun guns" I'd say go for it, but if you are tight on a budget and are primarily interested in long range shooting/hunting I'd go with an entry level bolt action. Savage makes a decent and cheap bolt action!

I've been trying to sell a 2014 made M305 for a few weeks and I even dropped the price and no takers. It doesn't have the MIM bolt either.

I have another one that was built in 09 and its been great!

Drop another $50 and PM the OP and I bet he will buy it.

Mine is about 5 years old. It has a forged receiver, the barrel indexing is correct, the rifle fires and cycles without fail. I have fired around 1500 rounds of Chinese and my reloaded ammunition in this rifle . It shot 8 inch groups at 100 yards bone stock out of the box. I think the trigger is ugly, one friend who has shot it love the trigger. After mounting the action in a Sage stock with a Sadlak piston, recoil spring, spring guide, op rod, with carefully loaded ammunition and a good scope mount with good glass on top I can get 1.5 inch 10 shot groups at 100 meters most times. This is good enough for a US Army rifle company or Marine rifle company to be designated sniper. Now having said that, I have heard scuttlebutt that the new Norinco M305 rifles in 7.62X51 have cast receivers verses forged as mine is. Yur milage may vary. Keep up your research before you pull the trigger and lay down the scheckles.

I bought an M305 for my first center-fire rifle thinking it would be a good "one gun" to cover target shooting, hunting, zombie apocalypse, etc. I've now spent about $2k on it and it still is not accurate enough for precision work, it's heavy for a hunting rifle, and the length/swing weight make it less than ideal for 3gun style shooting. I've since bought a Savage bolt action which is less than half the cost, over twice as accurate, and a couple pounds lighter. I still have and like the M305... I'm also a tinkerer at heart so playing with a platform like this is a lot of fun for me. I would recommend getting one if you like to tinker and/or have a fondness for the M14 platform, but look elsewhere for a hunting or Target rifle.

I got my M306 from Elwood Epps in Ontario. It has a 18.5" barrel. I use a M14.ca CASM mount with a Bushnell Elite Tactical 3200 5-15X40 mildot scope. It's a 2 MOA rifle. It is not a tack driver, but it is my go to for deer and bear hunting. Fully loaded it's 14.5 lbs with some small tools and cleaning kit in the butt stock shell holder.

You can hunt with a M 305, yes. However, if you are new-ish to guns in general, I would suggest that your hunting rifle be a simple bolt action, either commercial or milsurp.

Then, go ahead and pursue a M305, as they are a lot of fun and you will learn lots that will help you become a better gunner. (They are not a rifle for a new shooter.) Once you are familiar with the platform feel free to take it hunting, as 3 MOA is doable easily.

You asked about barrel length. I have one M305 with the standard 22 inch barrel and two that I had shortened to 18.5 inch; negligible loss in velocity and a bit handier, and a lot more fun.

I agree. The barrel length is nothing to be concerned about if it's used for hunting. Not many hunters are making 500 meter+ shots with it.
