If I was doing it all over again I would have bought a 22" Norc. The idea of cutting and threading the barrel is a big appeal. But since I do have a shorty, I ended up putting a springfield muzzle brake on it which does not have a bayonet lug so removal of the gas piston is simple. Most Norc M305s/M14s had the flash hider tac welded in place, so you have to bust it off with a hammer and a 1" piece of steel if you want to remove the flash hider at anytime down the road. As far as the Italian Wood 18.5's go, the wood is very nice, yes. But at the end of the day these rifles can be covered in machining marks and in my opinion aren't master pieces. I'm not about to go buy a KIA Rio and spend $3000 on rims and tires if you catch what I'm pitching. I have mine seated in a Blackfeather chassis. Due to my personal preference, I like the ergonomics of it, the metallic feel and the fact that I'm not afraid to ding up a aluminium chassis. Since your reason to purchase is for hunting, a plain jane 18.5 would do the trick just fine. If Italian wood is in the budget, i'd say screw it and spend the extra dough on NM springs, spring guide, shim kit and USGI sights. A set up like that can potentially (I say potentially because these rifles are hit and miss) whoop the Sh!t out of one just seated in expensive wood and not have the fear of dinging wood while in the boonies.
