Sure, take off the flash hider, drive the taper pins out and slide the FSB off, or break out Mr. Dremel (more ideally, a dremel clone) the cutting and grinding bits and hack off the tower with the cutter. Then shape the gas block with the griniding stones (don't over do it, or you'll have to replace the FSB).
 
That's kind of sarcastic, those are the steps, but everyone I've talked to about removing a taper pinned gas block has said pretty foul things about the experience. I had seriously considered putting a 10 inch free float rail on mine (since then I found a 7 inch 2 piece free float rail from Midwest Industries that required less work) if I had gone ahead with the 10 inch rail, I'd have cut the FSB purely because it's more secure than the replacement would be. Fabsports (at top) have tons of good stuff for AR's.
