I'm writing this post to put Norinco M4 quality issues to rest. If you don’t have the budget for a high end AR15 like me, this is a great choice. I originally handled the 1st gen Norinco m4 about 1 year ago...I must admit the quality was absolutely horrible compared to North American domestic variants. There were shooting reviews on them which showed they were on par (accuracy wise) with American made ar15’s. Even with the performance I was not convinced to buy one since the fit and finish was terrible. Around Spring 2010 there was word of the new Norinco CQ-A M4’s going to be imported into Canada. Initial word was that the fit and finish was much better than the original CQ’s. This had now convinced me to buy one. I originally put my order in with Marstar, but after a several month wait I cancelled and purchased one from Epp’s which was only an hour drive away. When I finally got my hands on it, boy was I impressed. The finish is actually anodized rather than painted, the lower and upper had very little play, Norinco got it right!!!

Performance

Performance wise i have no complaints, it's slicker then a 8 ball off of Megan Fox's ass ;) In all seriousness it is a straight shooter. I have had no malfunctions what so ever off the hundreds of reloads and factory ammo i have fed it. As far as the trigger goes it certainly is a big improvement over the original Norinco CQ's. The trigger is a little rough straight out of the box but has really become extremely smooth compared to its initial state. Like all firearms it requires some breaking in. Once the barrel has had a bunch of rounds through it the accuracy settles down and easily (through my tests only to 100 yards) keeps up with all other ar-15's. Don't believe me?

Mods

Even with the fit and finish upgrades there are a few things that I think need to be changed at bare minumum.
1. Replace the charging handle, what a POS. New American made charging handles can be purchased for around $30. If you prefer a particular charging latch, find one with the style you like and take out two birds with one stone.

2. If your hands are big like mine a new pistol grip might be in order. There is nothing wrong with the A2 that comes with it. I purchased a magpul moe grip ($25ish) with the enhanced trigger guard ($10) and never looked back.

3. Now there is very little play between the upper and lower receiver, but if you like things in life tight like I do ;) think about getting an accuwedge ($5) It takes out any little play there is.
Past that all other mods are preference.

Mags

In my opinion there are only two choices for magazines, the only separating factor is polymer or metal.
1. Polymer? Magpul P-mags ($35 per mag, dynamite monkey)

2. Metal? C products ss mags ($40 per mag, Questar or Arms East)

Optics

Optics is really a personal choice. If you want a good bang for your buck I recommend Vortex optics ($150-250). They have a lifetime (no questions asked) warranty out of Guelph ON. I accidently stripped my mounting screw, called them and they sent me a new mount :) Both me and my partner in CQB use them and outshoot guys running Aimpoints and other high end optics d:h:

*UPDATE* Oct 17
I am truly amazed at this rifle and its capabilities. I now have close to 1000 rounds through it with not one malfunction :D......if this doesn't sway your opinion on this economically priced super rifle this will

We managed to take 1st place in the CQB finals . Both my partner and I were using Norincos. He has the CQ with a Vortex strikefire and i have the CQ-A with a Vortex sparc. I shot a 453  my personal best. I have also now realized the limitation of my stock trigger and plan to upgrade to a better trigger for next season. For the $720.00 base cost i honestly believe this is the best firearm i have purchased so far. I hope by posting this it will sway more opinions on these rifles. :D

what quad rail did you put on ? did it fit with no hassle?

It's made by tufforce. The only place that I have seen that carries them is Ellwood Epps. I believe I got mine for $83.00 after taxes. It fits like a glove, no play and no problems at all...just make sure you get the carbine length. Much better then nc star and utg IMO ;)

Great post, thanks for sharing! I'm waiting for my Norc M4 coming in next week and will join you guys have fun. Have no ideal which scope I should go with yet. Is NCstar 1-4x good for the cqb match?

Tufforce quad rail might be OK but I bought Tufforce optic and the lens broke after 10 rnds on my Norc M4 and ended up in the shooting range's garbage can

Beware of cheap chinese plastic!
But I Gotta say i love my chinese M4 :D

Magnified optics will improve your score in cqb (if your doing your part), just for the fact of being able to see the v ring better. A NCstar optic i would stay far, far, far away from. Honestly just get a Vortex red dot. Mine is the Sparc (2moa dot) i got it for $240 shipped, there is also the Strikefire (4moa dot/make sure its the one with the ar 15 rings) for a little under $200 shipped. Grouse river outfitters is the only dealer i know that CURRENTLY carries Vortex optics. Search the sparc on, ar15 . com........you will be very surprised :D

Thanks for the review and all your suggestions. Our dicks are safe  now! I feel better about directing shooters on a budget towards this platform!

Cheers,
Barney

Hey pobcat, have you had any issues with the P-Mags? What kind of factory loads are you using?

Thanks
SM

No issues with the P-mags.....other than I wish I had more of them :D as for the factory loads it was all winchester white box. The group in the picture was shot using my reloads, Win brass, CCI primers, Hornady 55 gr FMJ BT with CANN, sitting on 26 grains of WIN 748  (gaurenteed to cycle any ar-15 :p ).

wholesale sports sells vortex too

Isnt Vortex a airsoft line of optic?

No.

They've been coming on strong for 2.5-3 yrs now. Most but not all of their stuff gets good reviews.

I picked up a StrikeFire from WSS today, under $180. Looks good, quality is way up from other low-ish end stuff I looked at today. I need a low ring (CZ858) so if you have one and need a high for an AR shoot me a PM. Range test tomorrow.

I know ncstar is cheap but I threw on a 100 dollar optic and I have to say it aint bad. Nice and bright and dead on. I got one with the quick release system and I like it. No complaints yet anyway.

How hard is it to change out the charging handle? I found some vids on the latch but nothing on the handle itself. I'm an AR noob
Changing the charging handle honestly takes a matter of seconds. Seperate the upper and lower reciever via the rear takedown pin. Next pull the charging handle back, pull the bolt out then pull the charging handle out of its guide channel (replace with new one).......once you get one in your hands and understand the ar-15 operating system it is quite simple :D

Who has put a drop in trigger group into their Norc M4? If so which one and was it worth the difference?

I'm planning to do exactly that. My trigger is really nasty - the surfaces are very rough. I may try a quick lapping as a stop-gap, but I think I'm going to order a two-stage trigger next week. It's my only complaint, really.

The trigger really does get smooth with time (dry fire a couple of hundred) if you really don't like it try the RRA NM 2 stage trigger. Best bang for your buck, it is really light and smooth.
