Norinco MP5A

Why can't someone clone one, make some subtle changes and market it as an MP-"Phif", and therby offer a new rifle that is not prohibited by name?

The MP5 is fun, but unless it's for specialized tasks, most users are going away from it.

I almost never use mine unless I'm teaching the course.

Pretty much all my non-pistol range time is on the M16FOW, with a little bit of bolt-gun thrown in.

Right on, all I could find about their gun laws is that they are very restrictive...?

The way the govt over there is to license each firearm that every person owns.Basicaly you have to pay the govt tons of money if you happen to own lots of firearms.Yes they allow full auto and unlimited mag capacity. The govt once in a while offer amnesty to loose firearms meaning the ones that are illegal and have it license without any charges to the owners. The people have a very strong gun culture, there's always a gun in every household legal or not. They also have their own CCW, but again you have to get a permit for every gun that you want to carry which is only good for a year. The joke is the only thing that they are not allowed to own are crew served weapons.:D

Aww no M777s? Darn.

They shoot 9mm, .40 and 10mm Auto ammunition depending on the chambering. Cyclic rate is about 800 RPM. The Chinese have since pirated the design without compensation to the patent holders in an attempt to make money. That about covers the thread as far as guns are concerned.

patent holders? I know of no gun built in China during patent affect.

Forgive my limited knowledge but HK did not put any sort of patent on their roller delayed blowback design? Blah Blah Blah CETME but IIRC HK owns the roller delayed system as of now. I can manufacture and distribute a cola drink Called "Norinco Coca-Cola" legally with the same markings and labelling as the aforementioned drink in North America? Simply because it was made in China?

The patents (if any) expired long ago and are no longer in affect. They last no longer that 25 years. As for the coca-cola name, that is a trademark, and lasts as long as it is used. Very different things.

Now if Norc called their gun the MP5, then you would have a point.

I was under the impression it was 75...? My bad. I wouldn't argue with you as you deal with this stuff for a living.

Well Iam glad we are back on track. WP is a VERY credible member and personal attacks will result in bad stuff.

Now back to the mp5 thingy...I have shot a few of the HK in go fast and semi selection and love that gun. My expeerience was just target shooting so I can only comment on that. A damn fine way to spend alotta $ on ammo in a very short time!

FWIW the folks at the Chinese factories are very conscious of patent infringement. China does copy most of their designs for civi guns, but that has more to do with their customers than the factories. The guns that they have designed T81, T97, etc, for the most part have been very good. They, like most gun designers, use already established designs in their "new" guns, as most countries do.
