Norinco MP5A

...I have shot a few of the HK in go fast and semi selection and love that gun. My expeerience was just target shooting so I can only comment on that. A damn fine way to spend alotta $ on ammo in a very short time!

It is a fine way to spend $$ on ammo. Especially when you aren't paying for it. ;)

The MP5 is fun, but unless it's for specialized tasks, most users are going away from it.

I almost never use mine unless I'm teaching the course.

Pretty much all my non-pistol range time is on the M16FOW, with a little bit of bolt-gun thrown in.

Ken Hackathorn recently wrote an interesting article about the MP5. He basically thinks that many groups have discarded it unnecessarily. Also made mention of the 10mm kicking ass like no other SMG he's ever used. Good article if you can find it.

Ken has probably forgotten more about guns than most will ever know. He's an amazing wealth of knowledge about pretty much any firearm out there. GSG-9 and other teams will bring Ken in to teach them how to use the MP5.

That says a lot about Ken and his abilities...

I haven't seen the magazine or the article, thanks for the link. :)

WP, why are some units moving away from it? Thx.

The perceived need for more firepower, that the pistol caliber isn't enough to do the job.

The other factor is the Mil/SF influence. The fast guys at war are using MK18's and M4's for their work. So, obviously, everyone needs to go to that platform for all work, from ship boarding to room entries and building clearing.

We're still heavily invested in the platform though, and it's much easier for a lot of users to shoot fast and accurately over the M16/C8FOW.

Great article! Just makes the itch to own an MP5 (or clone) that much more worse.

To expand on that some, the major issue is that 5.56 offers a significant performance benefit over 9mm at range or against body armor. The crux of the argument being that you can enter a wider variety of situations and be effective no matter how they develop. You don't want to caught be under gunned. Also a developing support for the M16FOW is the massive accessory support that exists for that platform, it offers much more flexibility vice the MP5. For police forces with limited budgets its an easier sell then multiple platforms.

Yeah, but does it "makes the operator enjoy a better annihilating firepower" while they "kill individuals or group active objects"?

Funny how everyone on CGN says "If they bring it in, ill buy 1, or 2 or 5" But unless it comes in and costs 200 bucks, its "Overpriced" or "ill wait until someone brings it in for cheaper"

Id like to see some one bring this in if it was possible, sell it for a reasonable price (to meet the obvious high demand?)

And then actually see how many people pony up and buy it......

Would be interesting to see the results, so many dealers have brought something in on a precieved Demand, and then get called out on over pricing.

At the moment this is a moot point with this particular gun.
I would still imagine demand would be very high if the laws were to change tomorrow. I would certainly buy one if it was under 1200$.

Since I have no idea what the consumer or police price would be for a mp5, if this was semi-auto only and restricted... I'd consider buying one.

Funny how LAPD SWAT is abandoning the short barrel 5.56mm and moving solidly back to the MP5. Way too much SF / Military influence into the Police Tactical World. The Military / SF role is different and they need a more flexible platform to cover open terrain on the way in and on the way out of the objective. This is where the 5.56mm shines (If fills both roles and operators can't carry 2 rifles into battle very effectively, they need one gun to do all jobs pretty good). In strict CQB or shooting from a tight perimeter, the MP5 is fine. The "Defeat Body Armor" thing is way over rated and the 5.56mm has the wound profile / stopping power of a .22 long rifle once it passes through the soft body armor of the target (some thing that isn't told to all the Police Teams that insisted on going the 5.56mm route to deal with the dreaded "Soft Body Armor" situation). There is a real world out there that exists beyond internet experts.
