Norinco NP22 Sig clone question

My friend has NP22. I do not know how old it is. I was looking at it yesterday and the frame looks like it was just painted with black paint. Slide has a different finish. I find it difficult to describe, but it is not paint, it almost looks like it is powder coated. Otherwise, inside it looks pretty similar to the Sig 226 that I used to own. He has Hogue grips on it and the gun sits very comfortable in the hand.
It is funny that although there are top quality computers and TV sets made in China, the Chinese gun manufacturers have not mastered the skills of aluminum anodizing. On this Sig clone and the M16/M4 clones, they had to use some kind of paint-like coating.

np-22, are they any good?
The reason I ask is because I've been having a hard time figuring out if I need to completely strip off the existing finish on the frame. I want to refinish it with a dark earth gunkote or durabake during the holiday season. I know that these products work well with blued and parkerized surfaces once they are degrease, however I have no idea how to approach this unknown finish on the frame.
The NP22 is a great pistol. I've had no problems spitting 500-800 rounds down range in a single visit. I've never had any FTEs to date. The only problem I've ever had with it was a result of my own clumsiness, when it was knocked off the top rack of my safe. It landed on the hammer and I had a problem where the sear would disengage when the slide was being cocked, or dummy rounds being chambered. Repairs were simple as standard sig parts were easily dropped in by myself. I took this as an opportunity to install SIG's SRT kit along with a new hammer and a fresh set of springs. So far so good and the pistol still fires perfectly.
