Norinco NP29 Extractor

Hello all, I recently bought a Norinco NP29. It's a 9mm 1911 clone. It is my first center fire handgun. I went to the range 2 times and shot 50 rounds on both occasions. The first time I had one failure to extract, the second time 4 failure to extract. I checked the internet in hope of finding how to tweak the 1911 extractor and found the following guide: http://www.m1911.org/technic2.htm

First, the extractor is already bent much more than on a 45 ACP. I tried to put a loaded round under the extractor as described, and there is no way the round will be kept under tension. There is a lot of play between the side of the slide at the breach face and the round when under the hook of the extractor. So the round automatically fall from the extractor as soon as I let it go.

I tried to bend the extractor a little more. The extractor is already bent a lot and it seems to rub in the extractor channel, preventing it from pushing the round on the side of the slide at the breach.

My question is, is it safe to remove some material from the extractor to let the hook curve more in the direction of the firing pin? In the tuning guide, it is written "This is done by removing a small amount of material at a time, from the locator pad, while maintaining the radius". But in my case it does not seem that the locator pad is rubbing against the channel, it's higher on the extractor.

I also read somewhere else that some 1911 in 9mm have their breach face cut for 40 S&W, causing poor extraction. Anybody know if this is the case with the Norinco? The breech face seem larger than the 9mm rim on my gun, but since I don't have an empty 40 shell, I don't know if it would fit.

I was talking to a guy at the range the other day about 9mm 1911 extractor issues and he basically stopped me and said "just pick up an Aftec...it's the first thing i do to 1911's". I guess what he was getting at was that with all the 'tweaking' and time spent screwing around, I could just pick one of these up and be done with it.

I have no experience with these so i don't know if they're crap or not but he's not the only one who said this to me. I may give it shot very soon.

Yea, maybe just buy a new extractor 9mm 1911 extractor from a known quality company...the extractor would be cheap compared to other guns, and shop time for a smith.

I'm no expert on the 1911, but I'm certain the 9mm extractor is a different product/specs from that of the .45's, so be certain you are ordering the correct part.

Order an Aftec extractor. They work very well. I had the same issue with my 1911 9mm and after playing with the stock extractor and still not getting it to work I put in an Aftec and have not had a single FTE in over 1000 rounds.

Finally took the file...

I finally took the file and filed away the part that was preventing the hook to correctly extend from the extractor channel and adjusted the tension as per the tutorial. I will be going at the range tomorrow and will report how it went. But after a couple manual cycling , it seems to work a lot better! I also polished the trigger hook as suggested in the tutorial since the first time I reassembled everything and tried the action, I was getting a three points bind. Hopefully everything will work good tomorrow.

It's working

Just an update to let you know that taking the file and removing a little bit of material and following the tutorial was a success. I just shot 100 rounds without any FTE or FTF. 100% reliable
