I am looking to buy my first handgun but money is tight....are the norinco replicas any good?? i know there is alot of bias towards norincos but i am just looking for a cost effective functional handgun...any input it appreciated.

I know a couple of people that has used them and love them. For the price you cant go wrong. I would suggest the np22 (sig 266 clone) or one of the 1911's.

get the $99 dollar jobby and put the money you save towards ammo. Not much good spending "your limit" on a gun, if you can't afford ammo. (I have one on the way. I could care less about the snickers from my gun snob friends......I snicker too at the waste of 6-8 hundred bucks they did just to plink like me. ) If you plan to shoot competitively..... well thats a different story, but for just plain fun plinking, this norinco is a good start.

I bought a NP-28 (double stack 1911 in 9mm) and love it. I have put a few thousand rounds through it and it works great. It's a little picky with flat nosed bullets, but since I learned that one hicup I feed it a steady diet of round nose shells and have not had a failure to feed since.

I love my norc and plan on getting a NP-58 in the future to try the 'sig' feel.

Hop this helps......

I just got a Norinco 1911 and a 213,they are a little rough around the edges chinese do not know the meaning of deburr after machining, that said for the money i think they are a great buy.I have about 200 rounds through the 45 the gun was a little tight the first 25 rounds after that great.I fired round nose lead swc lead and swc plated bullets through it and never had a problem. The trigger and sights on the 45 are not bad right out of the box.The 213 i have not fired yet,it looks like a fun gun to shoot i like the profile of the gun relatively small and thin.

I have a 1911 A1 and my nephew has two 1911 A1's. Not as smooth as my Kimber custom 2. You can buy 3 norinco's for the price of the kimber. The three Norinco's after cleaning shot to point of aim at 25 meters.

Norinco 1911's...

Dude... Do a search...

That all said.......... my own experience with the Norinco 1911's has been very positive.

New series 1911A1 and 1911A1 compact [commander] .45ACP:

I had a Norinco 1911 and while it was very roughly finished, it shot like it was a $1000 pistol. Good pistol to buy and then modify. For the price, you cannot go wrong. It didn't like hollowpoints though and preferred ball ammo as far as reliability goes.

I have shot the Norinco police model from Canada Ammo. It is a lot of gun for the price.

For someone who likes to tinker with sights and grips etc. and who only uses the pistol for target shooting (i.e. it's not life threatening if it jams or stutters) it is a perfect intro to the 1911.

If I were in law enforcement (I'm not), and carried every day(I don't) I would likely choose a Springfield, Colt, Kimber or other high end brand. Or at least I would send it to Armco for a professional once over.;)
