Hey, so it's getting to the point where I'll be replacing alot of the Chinese components on my M14 for Springfield Armory parts, most being National Match quality.

Two Questions,

1. On the rear sight, I ordered a National Match windage knob & NM sight base. They didn't list a NM elevation knob so I got the regular one. I also got the regular aperture sight (I don't like hooded sights) So, will all these pieces interchange or do you need all National Match parts to assemble the sight assembly?

2. The Chinese bolt... Alot of American forums are suggesting that the most important upgrade you can do to the Chinese clones is upgrade to a USGI bolt. They say the Chinese bolts are soft and don't come headspaced properly. Is this true? Should one consider upgrading the bolt, or is it good enough?

BTW my M14 is the 2011 CanAm Shorty.

1. You will need to use the standard elevation pinion on your NM base and windage.Carefull on the SA inc NM base, some use a ball bearing and spring to get the NM clicks. A SA inc receiver is cut for the spring and detent but your Chinese rifle is not. A USGI spec NM windage knob and base are what you want for your Rifle. SARCO sells cast versions of these,I am not sure if they ship to CANADA or not. A standard aperature can be fitted to a NM base, but it will most likely need to be stoned on both sides to fit into the base. These are very tight and most of the time need to be fitted.

2. This was somewhat true on the early Chinese rifles imported into the USA,but if what I am told is true the Newer versions of the Chinese rifles imported into Canada are much better and are not soft like "some" of the early U.S. imports.
I own 4 Polytech rifles . 2 have USGI bolts and 2 don't.1 was converted because I had a whole box of bolts to try and I finally found 1 out of about 10 that dropped in and headspaced with 7.62 Nato gauges.
The other I sent out to a gunsmith to have a Criterion 18 1/2" barrel to be installed on ,so I had him install a USGI bolt to that one just for the heck of it,while I had him upgrade some other parts to it as well. Some were soft like some of the rear site parts, but alot of the normal gunsmiths that do not specialize in the M14 platform are checking headspace with .308 gauges. This is the reason for alot of the "Excessive" headspace horror stores that you read about. The rifle is chambered for 7.62 NATO,even though it is stamped .308.My rear site parts were infact all soft,so they did get replaced .If you want to see pics of my shorty drop me an email.
Hope this helps.

As long as head space is not an issue and you have a 2007 or newer rifle a new bolt is not a mandatory upgrade. Although I have yet to see a great pair of irons come on a Nork if you are not constantly shooting with them again no need to upgrade. Altough I always do rip out the rears and slap on new 1's that I pice together from Brownells.

Yeah, I plan on using iron sights only, so hopefully the SA set I ordered will work...
