Norinco SKS 7.62MM X 39

The 7.62 round was designed to kill people not animals.

There are plenty of Pistol caliber rifles out there that ethically take Deer every year that deliver far less energy at the point of impact then the 7.62x39.

Also the .303 cartridge was designed to kill people, as was the 8mm Mauser, and the 6.5x55 Swede etc etc.

No, the bottom line here is that you can blow a Moose' head off with an SKS.
I've witnessed 6 out of 10 smack a Moose at close range. Trust me, it died painless. The rounds went right through, so I say SKS on....SKS on.

Totally responsible, totally legit, aside from the unpinned mag of course.

i've been lucky enough over the years to knock down the odd moose be it a big bull ,cow or calf and have owned and hunted with most cals. not to upset anyone here my personal choice is the trusty 12 Gauge both 2 3/4 &3'' plain old rifled slugs ...mind you i'm not making 200 yard shots if my moose is out of my range i'll will walk up to it and shoot it after all it is a moose not much challange there ... we here in northern nova scotia have to drive the moose out of our yards only for them to return 10 mins later... that being said an 7.62x39 would work fine here on our moose.
A 12ga slug at moderate velocity to 100 yds would certainly have more "knock down power" than a 125gr .30 cal. bullet. Moose hate large heavy bullets.

There is nothing wrong with the SKS for moose. Those 5 shots are like a high velocity buckshot. Bang, bang, bang ,bang, bang. Reload with a new mag, Bang, bang, bang, bang, bang! Ground moose meat!

Would do the job but I would rather have a 30-30.
The 30-30 bullets work at 30-30 velocities.

A 7.62x39 may pinhole a 150 Horndy at 200 yards....Then again it may not.

I think there are better cost effective choices....An old 303 for instance.

Good luck!

As it was said here 30-30 has WAY more head room for heavy bullets. Red line for 7.62x39 is about 154gr (Wolf SP), and in my experience it gets it's best accuracy with bullets below 130Gr. So I would not count on the "good shot placement" with any bullet heavier than a standard for M43.
In my books, light game below 150yrds is it's only proper application.

I will use 154g Wolf in SKS and VZ858 tho then I take it out as a bush gun (BTW, wolf cartridges also well sealed against humidity) for really close ranges.

As for moose, there are far better choices of inexpensive powerful milsurplust out there.

I've shot a lot of deer with a 7.62x39. It has worked well for me.But for moose? I'd say its to lite. For all their compairisons a 30-30 the 7.62x39 will never be.If a cheap autoloader is what you want, for a little more money get the nork 305.308 with a 165grain sierra game king = dead bullwinkle.
