I've got a Chinese sks with no complaints, other than would like to use a detachable mag. Prefer a steel mag, but not shure if they make one. Any idea if anyone makes one or any detachable mag. Or do I need to provide more information about my rifle. Thanks in advance for any help.

i was able to buy two detachable steel mags for my norinco sks. They had a green follower, stamped steel made in russia. My sks was NOT the d model. They were $75 each tho. These were bought at a gunshow in Yorkton Sask about 4 years ago. They needed minor adjustments as the duckbill on them was a little long to fit properly in the mag well with the factory mag out. They functioned flawlessly accept that you had to hold the bolt back manually to load from the stripper clip as there was no bolt hold back. Then had to get a bipod because of the length of the 5/30 rounder mag.
Ive seen them on the net although they were going for a hundred each.

I had a few of the Tapco's, but traded them for something useful.
My problem with the DuckBill mags is the following:
1: The Bolt has to be back in order to insert the mag (this can be a hassle in practice).
2: Un-modified, they either don't work at all or work poorly when feeding from stripper clips.
3: They make the rifle bulkier without actually adding capacity (gotta love/hate that pop-rivet law).
Having said all that, I might end up stockpiling a few of the metal 5/30 rounders. If you poke around YouTube, it isn't hard to find videos showing why the stripper clip issue exists, and how to fix it - it involves a little bit of grinding on the real of the lips.
I would prefer the metal 5/30 over the polymer 5/20 or 5/30 for the aesthetics, also, the only functional reason to get the mags is "In case of SHTF/ZomPoc, pop the rivet and rock and roll"... Without getting too specific, it's an order of magnitude easier to pop the aluminum rivet from the metal mags than it is to dis-assemble the TapCo mags and chop out the the internal follower block. Again, for procedure, YouTube is your friend.

Don't know what I was thinking, but ya, you don't have to do anything to tapco's. The most reliable option I have heard of is grinding a nub off the factory mag and one little tack weld so that it doesn't swing open. The bolt itself can be modified so that it doesn't have to be open to load a mag either.
After the last shot is fired the bolt stays open so not really a big issue as some would make it. In my tactical training you go in hot.
As for the metal mag stripper issue I modded the feed lips to accept strippers on both, however the bullets jump out the back of the magazine and jam. The only way I could see fixing this is added some jbweld to close up the back of the magazine to keep this from happening. My promag however maybe a little different then what is on the shelves here. I wouldn't be interested to compare.
