Norinco SKS Model D, Is it allowed?

Hey guys me and a buddy where just wondering if a Norinco Type 56 Sporter Model D would be legal here.

The reason I am not sure if it is, is manly because it has the standard magazine taken out and changed so that it can take standard Kalashnikov AK magazines. I know that AKs are prohibs but the question is are there magazines aswell. Would it be possible for me to get a 10 round AK magazine pinned at 5 or even a 5 round magazine.

The reason I would like something like this is because I think it would be easier to be able to put the gun down and load the clip by hand, without those sharp 10 round strippers that always seem to try to put 6 in the magazine messing up. Also the slide dose not lock back so you would have to do a full pull back and release to chamber a round witch would feel and seem just, don't know how to say it besides better.


If anyone has or has seen one of these Type D models please let me know

The SKS D hasn't been imported into Canada in over a decade.

The production took place back in the 1980s for the US commercial firearms market. Canada got some as well. When they were banned in the US in 1994, they continued to be shipped to importers in Canada.

This was back during the big US "assault weapons" controversy. The ones manufactured prior to the US 1994 ban have the folding bayonet attached. The ones imported into Canada after the US ban have the bayonet lug machined off.

For a short period the Chinese thought their guns were going to be subject to the same restrictions under the AW ban as domestic manufacturers, but Chinese military style semi autos; AKs, SKS, M14S, ect ..... were banned from importation to the US altogether.

The US AW ban sunsetted in 2004. The Chinese military weapon importation ban didn't.

Back in the day, some standard SKS rifles were converted by some importers for the AK mag. They were sold as SKS "Sporters". They have the stripper clip notch in the top of the bolt carrier and the bolt itself was remachined for the AK mag, but a loaded AK mag cannot be inserted into the gun on a closed bolt. You must open the bolt and chamber a round to insert a loaded magazine into the gun.

These also have the standard SKS fixed mag latch to hold and release the mag at the trigger group side. SKS D has an AK style paddle release.

There aren't any SKS Ds left in China and they are not about to restart production for a market as small as Canada. They come up used from time to time, so you shouldn't have much problem finding one in the EE., however they are going for about five times what they sold for new.
 
I had one, theyre nice for running with a scope but for iron sight use Id stick with a type 56/45 SKS. The mags are much more of a pain to load and it takes alot longer to reload once all your mags are empty. For a standard SKS either pull 5 rds off the stripper before loading or put your fingers betweeen the 5th and 6th round leaving the remaining 5 at the top of the clip as you push the lower 5 into the magazine. If we were allowed full capacity mags then SKS-Ds would be very popular here, but for the extra cost of both the rifle and spare AK mags up here the $200 type 45/56 SKS are much better IMO. While the CZ-858 and variants are better suited to detachable mags.
 
But the CZ are restricted right? And I have a regular Russian 54 SKS but I would like a different one with a magazine it just seems cool.
 
I have an SKS D. Shoots fine, I think a little better than my other fixed mags. I have had a couple fixed mags for 17+ years and honestly find myself reaching for them over the D-Box for day to day use. I can reload the fixed mags faster with the stripper clips; and you can have a whole pile of strippers ready to go (that didn't sound right) whereas the AK mags you have to stop & reload once you've run through your stash, not a big deal - but the strippers are faster. AK mags are getting kind of expensive and hard to find (Marstar has some NICE blued steel 5/30 & 5/40 at reasonable prices - but way more than 858 mags cause they are getting scarce. Lever Arms has some 5 rounders right now, 2 for 35$ pretty good price. E & I Sports in PG also sometimes has them, I haven't made my way out that far southeast in a while though).

Also the longer D-Box mags catch on everything in the bush, making it a pain in the can to pack around. The nice flush fixed mags do not snag, and carry well. So it stays as more of a range gun. One of these days I'll try it out at a 3-gun.

All that aside I enjoy my D-Box, probably mostly because they are kind of a novelty. Won't part with it.
