Norinco SKS

It's really funny (in a rather sad way) when you walk into a gunstore to see a D model priced for almost as much as a CZ858...Like WTF? :rolleyes:

Don't get me wrong, I love the SKS rifle, but give me a f-ing break. :rolleyes:

It's up there with going to local gunshows and seeing $15 crappy receiver cover scope mounts priced at $130. :rolleyes:

I just make mental notes of who is trying to screw me on these deals, and plan to avoid them in any future dealings.

That is my rifle. The stock is a solid butt Polish SKS Parade rifle stock that has been restored. I have it on mounted on an excellent condition first model Yugo M59, makes the rifle a heavy pig but she shoots pretty good and the recoil is nil. Stock cost me 100 USD shipped from Poland and took 9 coats of Tru Oil and about 27 hours of labour to restore.

What I don't get is why everyone has so much trouble changing mags on the D model. Even the little shorty five round mag is a a breeze.

It really doesn't take an extraordinary set of talents and super motor skills to perform that very easy task.

I think you can swap your charging handle with a regular model and get that effect. Why would you care thou? What does that add to the mag changing experience for you?

agreed...but its the free enterprise system we live in, scarcity creats demand... what the buyers are willing to pay, and the buyers are paying over $400.

too bad i dont have one to sell.:(

charging handle? Did you mean bolt carrier?
 
I've fired AK and Type 81, on which you can change mags like a breeze. But for SKS, you'll never get as fast as you do on these two guns. The design for SKS is stripper clip. After the mag is emptied, you insert the loaded slip in and slam the ammo into the mag. Done! All this can be done within one sec. D has never been my type, even though I saw them being sold for 195 bucks in Lever when they first came out. Just doesn't look right.

Plus, don't forget that D has never been made with mil spec.
 
The bolt hold open is not on the bolt carrier or the bolt, it's in the mag well, and is pushed up, by the magazine follower (on original models).

Let's see - they are both magazine fed 7.62x39 rifles... SKS-D has a chromed bore and accepts standard AK mags... 858 has it's own custom mags & no chromed bore.

I have one of each (a D and an 858) and I really prefer neither. Both have their advantages. I find the 858 is easier to handle and easier to take down, but I find the SKS is more accurate and seems a more stable shooting platform (my 858 has the folding stock). They are both well built rifles. The SKS stock is garbage, but the 858's chip board is also pretty crappy.

I would say with inflation, and given the market conditions, even if the floodgates to SKS-D models opens up, they'd still sell at $350-$400 brand new.
 
I miss my SKS. Only thing i hated about owning it was when ammo got scarse and I couldnt find anyone with some in stock, and i wasnt prepared to buy crates of the stuff at the time. Hopefully the funds will agree ( and wife ) when the SKS is restocked around Canada. I also miss my M44.

'Course it'll all be moot when the supply of cheap 7.62x39mm ball ammo dries up for good. Thousands of SKS's and 858's will be idle then... :eek:
