This may be a silly question, but I was at my local gun shop today and asked them if they had any SKS's, to which they replied they would get some Norincos in 2 weeks. Fine then they called their other store to check for stock, the their store had one with a synthetic stock and I said that must be used right? The owner of the store said "well all SKS's are used" ???!! Aren't Norincos new?

Not all Norincos are new. The Norinco millitary contract ones are likely used and, obviously, new production ones that have been previously owned are also used too. Norinco does make new ones for the civillian market, as the gun shop had seemed to suggest they were originally getting in.

Only the SKS-D is new made. There probably hasn't been an actual "new" SKS made since the early 80s.

China used the SKS as it's primary service rifle for the better part of 30 years.

I have seen new condition military issue SKS sold out of China over the years (mostly those sold by Bell Dist. as opposed to those from Lever). There were also large numbers sold here in the early 80s to early 90s when Century was in business. Those were used but un-refurbished military rifles from every factory number imaginable.

not a silly question but rather a complicated one . not everyone will agree with me.

generally speaking , i split the chinese made SKS in two categories , early chinese and later norinco , early chinese are made for their military and late norinco are commercially produce for the civilian market when the early chinese were basicly cleaned out of storage .

the better made SKS are the early chinese , the earlier in years the better and those were most likely all used and refurb , and the late norinco are most likely new .
