Nice work.

I had a friend try mine left handed just to check it out.
In the end one round out of forty went across the front of his walrus 'stache.
I told him he might have to keep it in trim. He felt ok with it kak-handed.
I was more uncomfortable watching than he was firing it.

Yes, and I have been for a while. It's a fun rifle, and while not left hand friendly, I have yet to take a hit. The deflector looks very simple and effective, I like it!

If you can find or fabricate a section of knurled tubing the length of the charging handle bolt and maybe 3/8"-1/2" in diameter with an ID hole the same as the OD of the bolt it would rotate on the bolt for comfort, give you something larger to grip and if coloured the same as the gun would actually look pretty near factory. I really like the deflector held on just by the pressure of the mating parts. Too many people manage to do a hatchet job on their guns with home innovations utilizing drilling, cutting and grinding. Even though I'm a righty I would be very interested in installing something like this if for no other reason than to not have to chase ejected brass all over the range.

Have you thought of wearing a full face balaclava while shooting or maybe growing an oversized mustached and lacing it with asbestos?

Catching the casings in my teeth is not my idea of a party trick.

Kidding aside have someone watch you stance and hold.
How angled are you to the rifle?:confused:
Could you square up more and still be comfortable?
Watching my friend, my rifle had casings going from 45 degrees forward all the way to 90 degrees right.
Even a slight change in body and hold can dramatically change case direction.

I haven't had major issues with the casings. Mine all seem to launch in a forward direction of anywhere from 45 to 65* degrees(guesstimation) to my front right. When shooting it left handed I did not have one come near my face. Having said that I've only shot 10 rounds from my left. They all land somewhere between 24 and 45 feet away (I actually measured).
 
Somewhere on here is a picture of a person who fired it on the extreme gas setting of '2', and sure enough the casings were driven an inch or two into the four by four beams next to him at his range.
I can understand the hesitation of all you lefties.

Ya that's a deal breaker if it doesn't work with M14.ca's FTU. But props to someone actually designing and trying something. Currently I won't be buying this rifle unless there is something done to make this rifle left hand friendly.
 
SO I finally got around to trying my Shell deflector on the T97. (Cold winter keeps me from playing out doors.) I made a video of it but am trying to figure out how to put it up. anywho, The deflector works perfectly. I didnt take a single shell in the face and it did not get in the way of how I hold the rifle. I was rather impressed actually at how well it worked. IT sends the shells downa nd forward with out any issue at all.

I'll post the video of it as soon as I can figure out what's up with photobucket.
 
After seeing those pics, I made one pretty much identical to that one and it works great. Also like you said, forward and down. No FTE or anything. Thanks for the idea. Easy to make if anyone is curious.
