Norinco Tokarev question

I was at the range with my 7.62x25 Tokarev knock-off this evening where I fired 86 rounds. The first 60 or so went off without a hitch; I might as well have been firing a $1000 gun. After that, however, I experienced multiple FTEs. Yesterday I had the same thing: the first 60, no problem; after that, lots of FTEs.

This raises three questions:
Is this normal for a Tokarev, especially a Norc?
Is the problem caused by heat or dirty ammunition?
Is there anything I can do to fix it? :bangHead:

Sounds like it might be gumming up. Maybe you're using too much lube, or maybe the wrong kind. Some guys have said not to use oil as it soaks up residue pretty quickly. After all, it's a dirty gun burning dirty ammo :)

I'm no expert though, some of the other guys will have more to say
 
You just described my Norc Tok functioning perfectly.

If you're using the surplus ammo from Marstar, it's lacquer build up in your chamber. The first rounds are fine, but as the gun heats up, a bit of lacquer melts off and builds up in the chamber.

As far as I know, there's really nothing that you can do to prevent this. (maybe shoot fast and don't let ammo sit in the hot chamber? :p :D ) Pack a squib rod to pound out the cases and clean the chamber.

Sounds likely. I probably do use too much oil. I'll try firing a drier gun next time. :)

Yep, it's Marstar. (At ten cents around, you can't beat it.)

Wonder if I should strip the lacquer off before firing? :rolleyes:

Hmmm. Since the Norkarev is perfectly reliable when cool, and since it is the trimmest of my guns, and since it fits better into my one and only holster than the gun it's designed to hold ......

Actually, I'm not into concealed carry and don't plan to be. But what a neatly whacko carry it would be! :evil:
 
I don't think it would be too much oil, I keep mine soaked. Once I didn't wipe it off before shooting it to see what would happen. 200 rnds later, crud everywhere & it kept going shot after shot.

don't strip the lacquer off, no need, just clean the chamber a little bit with a brush after shooting "fast and furious" about 40-50 rds. because the chamber heats up quite fast and then the cartridge does not go quite "home".
In slow fire you should never have that problem.
I had that once, but used a mandrel with very fine steelwool and "polished"
the chamber smooth on a drill press.
You may have a "tighter chamber too when new tooling was used.
I used lacquered cases (brown and green colored ones) many years ago
in Europe (guest) firing the Russian PPSH 41 SMG with 71 drum and at
900 R/Minute flawlessly. I think by the time the chamber got really hot,
It ran out of ammo. .......(just kidding)
PPs 43 with the same results.
Never failed (4 clips)
Actually the chamber was within max. dimensions.

As a matter of interest, the Norinco Toks are not "Knock offs." China was (and still is) a communist country and was a trading partner with the Soviet Union. They started making the Model 33 Tokarevs at about he same time all the other com bloc countries did. Thats kinda like saying my fine Hungarian Tokarev is a "Knock Off" and that hurts!!..

Sorry to borrow this thread for a bit. :D

So far the only time I have had any issues was when I tried to use a 7.62x39 magazine with 9mm ammo.
(9mm needs the mag with the spacer along the back.) :D

Other then that she feeds, and fires like she should. :)
At the range a quick wipe, and patch after a few mags would probably solve the FTF issue.

Lots of rounds thru my Nork Tok Type 54 with only one problem - a super hot round seized the action up...but John Pullen got it going again in about a minute.
