I was looking to buy an 18" 870 for some fun shooting but then rememberd that Norinco makes a copy of the 'Winchester Model 1897 Trench shotgun' which can be had for not much more than an 870. So are these good quality or junkers? I know the Norincos have a smaller mag capacity and can only take 2 3/4" but the thought of mounting a long sword bayonet on a shotgun makes me all warm and fuzzy inside. :shotgun:

if you really like that type of styling i guess you can get some pretty nice 870's out there for low prices with the real remington name not to bad to norinco there really good to but u get a nicer finish and name with the rem... besides that i would check into the mossberg 590 there super nice lookin

You should ask this question in the shotgun section, but IMHO the HP9 14" barrel noirinco I have is just as good quality and finish as a Remmy version, and at much less the price.

I don't know about the 97 but I have their copy of the 87. (Lever action 12 ga.)
It's quite a solid gun and the quality is there. Only problem I found is it's choosey about what it eats. Some brands of shotgun shells are a tad longer when fired, and catch on the lip of the chamber, while others eject with no problem.

Norinco trench gun = 100% knock off
Made In USA 870 = the real deal

Which one would you rather have?

I went through this same process of picking a tactical shot gun. By the time I finished I had narrowed it down to the Mossberg 590 and several models of the Rem 870. My first choice was the Mossberg cause it had all the features of a "trench" gun. Bayonet lug, takes 3", good mag capacity and as I understand selected by one of the branches of the US armed forces as it met their specs. Unfortunately, the stock was a bit too long for me and I ended up choosing the Remington 870 Tactical. Also there is a bayonet adaptor out there for this baby.

I have a trench gun and am quite satisfied with it. The finish on the wood chips off and you should refinish it. The bluing on the metal itself is quite good and all exterior surfaces are highly polished. The interior is a little rough but smooths out over time. I am glad I bought it and the slam fire feature is fun as well. I have owned an 870 express in the past and I sold it. Sorry to say but the finish on the norc is better then on the express. The 97 is the gun the term trench gun was orginally applied to, and if you own one "trench gun" style shotgun it might as well be the one that started it all and for all intents and purposes the norc is an exact copy.

get it!

You need to learn how to write, or stop posting all together.
Punctuation isn't that difficult to learn, kiddo.

I have a norc trench 97. Very smooth, shoots well. I usually bring it out as back up while out hunting. The idea is to load it with slug and 000 buck shot in turn for game recovery, though I've never had to use it. This is the only shotgun I have, I find it's very handy.

One of my friends has one. I shot part of the EOHC surplus match with slugs with it. Even with no rear sites you are able to hit the 100 targets.

Wood is ugly and the finish is nice. A little ruff at first bit once you put a 100 or so rounds through it, she smooths out all right.

I say go for it. Fun gun.

Trench Guns

I have a Norinco trench gun that I am selling for a buddy of mine. He fired 5 rounds through it and put it back in the box. He wants $425 for it shipped.
Everything that came with it goes with it. He decided to sell some of his guns after his sholder injury.
I have a Winchester 97 Prison issue with a hand guard that I like and they work some smooth.
I would like to get one of the Mossbergs with the bayonet adaptor. I believe it's a purpose built firearm and is as solid as a rock.

I love my Norinco trench gun.

Is it a real Trench Gun? Well obviously not, but for the money, I'd rather have the look and feel of an old gun, since I collect nothing but World War I/II, than have a new tactical shotgun.

And, for what it's worth, at the last combat shotgun shoot my club held, the final relay was a speed event, with 10 milk jugs scattered around a 20 metre circle. You started about 30 metres away, had to run up, and shoot all the milk jugs over.

My "crappy knock off" Norinco beat the snot out of every tactical shotgun there, with a time of about 25 seconds. The only gun that beat mine was a Winchester Model 12, by about 2 seconds.

Of course the real question is WHYINTHEHELL winchestewr stopped making it!
Or why they didn't start up the productrion line on it again. The demand was there. Another case of not following the market. Somewhat irrellevant now, but they missed a number of chances.

On the same note, Anyone figure out why Colt charges more for the simpler design of their single action than their DA revolvers? It's not like they had to start from scratch with the product!

I got a beautiful old 1897 manufactured in 1906 for CAS for $250 (well it wasn't beautiful...it was a POS) but with some wood replacement and some internal parts, it works better than my Norinco 97 Trench did. I also have a '42 USGI Winchester 97 which compared with the Norc, is one slick unit.

The Norc was ok, but I found the barrel shroud liked to work itself forward during shooting until the mag tube fell out of the hole on the shroud that held it on. I probably ended up unscrewing it, moving it back and re-tightening it four times before I sold it. Thankfully I found the real thing a couple months later.

I don't hear many other speak of the trench version shroud problems like I had, so maybe it was just me. Other than that, it was ok.

I do have the same problem. But I guess this shouldn't be a problem with the norc military trench gun which is being sold by lever arms.

So it's a good gun then. I might just pick one up over an 870. Either way, I'm getting two shotguns; one shorty for fun and one standard 870 for hunting. It'll be good to know if the first 7 rounds don't work, I can always use the stabbing device at the end.

Consumer IQ test:

Norinco = half the price, better quality.

870 = twice the price, lower quality.
