I am looking at getting an sks, but I would really like a way to have a removable mag, are the type d norincos still being made? How are they for reliability and where could I get one if so?

Also if they no longer exist, would you recommend a russian or norinco sks? I see marstar has them for preorder, but does anyone have any idea on when they would be in stock? Also, I found this site with refurbed russian sks,

http://w ww.alsimmonsgunshop.on.ca/Military.html

would they be a better choice then a norinco? Any info on these subjects would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

the norincos shoot well i have one its fine. plus they are cheeper. the only thing is the historys kept better with the russians and also there wood and actions are usual made with better fits finishes. if u do by a norinco gun id sugest a unissued military or an older comercial because some the newer coercials are made a little more cheaper still good just not the same hope this helps

The SKS-D has not been sold by dealers for awhile. They do show up through private sales and range in price from $400.00 to $500.00. If you want a SKS with a detachable mag get a Russian or Chinese and get some detachable duckbill mags. I have one of the Chinese SKS that Marstar is getting, can not complain. The price will range between $150.00- $200.00 depending where you buy.

Buy Chinese or Russian.

As to Chinese D type. Long gone no one selling those and if they do mags hardly available.

Good luck.

Keep in mind that you always pay tax and shipping separate when you buy from a dealer. The best deals can be found on the EE here from private sellers, for example in the link above the SKS with laminated stock would run you at 270 plus 13 % HST plus around 25 for shipping= 330 while those can be found on the EE for up to 100 less.

Just buy the magazine extra ($50 to 70), I don't think the SKS-D are worth the money, rather go straight to a CZ-858 which are much nicer and better than a SKS in my opinion.

And honestly, I don't expect much from the Chinese SKS coming in, the best deals can always be found on the EE.

I thought about the SKS D before buying a regular Russian SKS. Bought 2 for the same price as a D. Using duckbill mags got me the same utility as the D.

I have to agree buying though a Private sale on EE is the best way to get the best deal on the rifle and magazine. No taxes and shipping can be included in sale. If you do find a good deal on a SKS-D, the magazines are available no problem. They take the standard AK magazine.

I'm not aware of any shortage of AK mags. They are usually plentiful at any gun show. OP if you can find a D for a good price go for it. I have an M model which takes AK mags like the D model and 2 other Chinese and 2 Russian. But any SKS you buy is going to be a fun gun they all work great.

Anyone able to chime in on the SKSs in the link? Are they any good? Also, there a reason I cant get into the EE forums? Is there something I have to do first?

The SKS's that are sold today are basically all the same, does not matter what dealer you buy from. Some look better than others but thats about it.
The best way to find the SKS for you is find a store front gun shop that sells SKS's and pick your own, if looks matter to you keeping in mind the price points. To access EE you have to register, see FAQ.

Also would you recommend a CZ-858 overall? What would be the best place to purchase one?

It sounds like you are looking for a style of rifle. If you are looking for the AK style then the 858 is the closest to it your going to get. In my opinion the 858 is way over priced for what you are getting. They are sold all over.....

If you see a Model D for $500.00, save up another $195.00 and go for a CZ858. It's the "Canadian AK47" and operates and shoots better than an AK47, plus it takes detachable magazines like the AK47.

If you want to save $$$ and buy an SKS, buy an SKS-1945 or Chinese PLA SKS, and buy the removable magazines. We sell both the mags and the 858's.

I have 3 x SKS and 1 x CZ-858 and I have to say that the CZ is by far better than any SKS, D or not, Chinese, Russian, Yugoslavian, they are all the same, cheap and great for the price BUT a CZ beats them by far any day.

Lighter, more precise, modern with the receiver style design we love from the AK, you can put an adjustable stock on it, the magazine are AK style and cheap, pimp it out any way you like.

If you are a new HST payer, I think Ki11ercane has the best price right now as he pays the tax increase.

The solution is simple - buy one of each. They are easy enough to sell or trade if they are not for you. SKS are cheap and plentiful. The 858 is also a great deal - non-restricted, well made, plenty of extras available and half the cost of a restricted AR.

my first sks was an unissued chinese military. bought from moving target at a gunshow. I recently picked up an sks D, the deal was too sweet with all the extras it came with. Comparing the 2, the chinese factory 306 unissued military takes the cake...by a long shot. The machining and finish are worlds apart, patches snag on burrs all over the inside of the D, and you can see how marked up the internals are because of it. After cleaning the D, I pick up the 306 and marvel at how much nicer it is. It will stay in full military trim as long as I own it. Another point I should make about all wood stocked SKS's is photographing them inside does them no justice. Once you see a good outdoor picture with natural lighting, or see one in person, the wood looks so much nicer, there is so much more to them than can be caught on camera inside. I would like to add a nice russian laminate stocked type 45 to my collection. As for the D, the only good thing I can say about them is doing mag changes AK style and full stroke recocking the rifle is fun, but requires a pistol gripped stock to hold the rifle up comfortably while doing it. If you plan on keeping it in its wood stock, I prefer a type 45 or 56 with bolt hold open and a stripper clip guide for reloading. The 858 takes the cake for an AK like shooting experience.

I would echo the lower standards of quality control on SKS D models. I ordered one mail order a while back, and was quite disgusted with all the little fit, finish and parts mismatch 'defects' that I returned it for a refund. If there was a conversion kit that let a shooter use AK mags in a conventional SKS.

unfortunately that wouldnt be possible due to how high the lip that catches the reciever is on the front of the AK mag. There is a groove machined into the SKS-D reciever to catch that lip, so a bolt-on option couldnt be made. But there was a gentleman on here who recently bought a little adaptor that allowed him to cut down the duckbills on his tapco mags quite a bit so they are less clumsy and fit a standard mag pouch. that would be a less expensive and no-gunsmith solution for a better detatchable mag.

I was looking at the CZs, what im looking at really doing is shooting surplus ammo, the corrosive stuff apparently. I hear that the sks takes that type well due to the chrome lined barrels, but the CZs require extensive cleaning after using surplus ammo. Any truth to this? Do CZs with chrome barrels exist?
