Why not have Norinco try a Valmet clone. I think it would be a popular platform to build various guns on. You could have an ak 47 set up, a .223 galil clone, and you have the .308 platform that could easily be converted into a Dragunov.

I don't know if its been put forward but it sure would be cool.

I don't think Norinco will invest too much more in Canadian specific gun markets. I don't think most companies will with the wrecking ball the liberals and mounties are swinging around to impact us gun owners.

Unless the government themselves buys Norincos for inuit to hunt with and then find themselves with an awkward contradiction it will be classified prohibited.

Can a Ford be made by Chevrolet?

If it was made by Norinco, it wouldn't be made Valmet. The wording that exempts the Valmet Hunter and Valmet M78 does not include the term "variant" in the exemption. So only Valmet made Hunters and M78 are not prohibited.

First problem is obtaining the rights to the Valmet name.
If you can secure the rights to produce/manufacture the Valmet rifle there is a possibility,

However, without obtaining the rights, you are essentially making a prohibited device as every other ak-47 is prohibited by OIC besides the Valmet rifle

But if it did happen, that would be hella cool!

Only valmets can be valmet. I looked into this years ago.

Also metso/sako, etc have a very complicated trademark structure as a result of takeovers, sales, etc and no one seems to know or care about the Valmet firearms trademark

A valmet hunter is a 4000$ AK as opposed to $400.

Atrs hunter is a firearm that takes some AR component that is non restricted.

can anyone post a link to a thread or article as to why the valmet m78 is NR? please.

Because they say so.

Long story short, some time long ago the Canadian guberment armed the Inuit with Valmet Hunters and M78s in case the Ruskies came across the Bearing Sea looking for troubles. When the Firearms act came about and all AKs and their variants were prescribed as prohibited someone realized they had created 10,000 paper criminals who were in posession for firearms provided by the same Federal goverment. It was easier to make these 3 particular models NR vs trying to round them all up years after they had been bought, sold and traded freely and legally.
