So after saving my pennies i am in the market for an AR. Now my dilemma is buy the cheaper priced norinco and have leftover cash for accessories or buy a higher quality AR and no accessories. I have heard all the norinco's are crap propaganda, i would like to hear from norinco owners and former owners to see if i might as well spend the extra cash or blow the whole wad on something like an RRA elite operator.

I have 2 RRA's and they are really nice. I had a chance to look over a Norinco recently but have never actually fired one - so take this for what you think it's worth.

The Norinco is much less refined than the RRA.
The finish is not as nice on the Norc.
When you pull the bolt back and release it on the Norc, it just doesn't seem as smooth. In defense of the Norc it was unfired and fairly dry.
Ergonomics are the same although the hogue style grips on my RRA's are much more confortable than the standard grip on the Norc.
The RRA operator stocks make for a much nicer cheek weld than the carbine stocks do. The Norc comes with the standard style carbine stock.
The single stage and two stage triggers on the RRA's are very nice. The Norc trigger was not nearly as nice. This won't matter if it's just for blasting at the range.

When I was a young guy Norc wasn't around. I would have loved to have the option so I could get one because at the half the price of a North American one it would have been affordable for me.
I guess you have to ask yourself what accessories you really want. Personally my only AR accessories that I have use for are a sling and scope. Accessories get expensive fast...

So far I have had no problems with my M4 Norinco. The fit and finish is more of a standard militry type, nothing fancy. Upper and lower are tight, rear sight is less than tight. Bolt cylces smoothly and is well finished. Stock mags a rough looking.
I too looked at the price compared to a North American AR.
Example- LMT SPM-16X $1699
Norinco- $675
22 conversion kit- $245
1000 Rds 223 -$430
5 Pmags - $125
*Total spent on Norinco with extras = $1475.

I stayed away from AR's till the norc. Couldn't be happier. I had played with some big dollar AR's that didn't run as well.

My norc just runs and runs and I am doing a lot of tweaking to tame it and change it. All common US access swap in and I have mine pretty well kit. total expenditure is less then a box stock US name brand AR.

that works for me.

Great feedback guys. These are exactly the the things I'm pondering. I am having trouble justifying the extra money on the north american AR. It will be used at the range for blasting away as I have no plans to buy a shemagh and some 511 pants anytime soon :D I think the norc with the 22lr conv and a few choice acc is the way to go. It will also leave enough extra for a norc 1911a1 sport in two tone as well.

Oh I didn't realize that getting 2 guns was an option. I change my answer to: Two guns are always better than one! :D

Like you I am new to black rifles, so just got a Nork this fall. Love it! No failures yet, just got a 22 conversion from fellow nutter and will try that out today. Definately not as pretty as some but for killing paper it is a lot of fun. Used it for a 3 gun (shared with a friend), ran flawless fro both of us.

Cheers

i got a bushmaster and a colt both very nice rifles but for some reason my norinco M4 runs just as smooth as they do at way under half the price this is how i see it you can spend 1500 and up on smith and wesson ar and then do like most do put all the magpul furniture on it bringing your total up or just buy the norinco like i did 700 for the rifle and with all the magpul furniture and the 5 pmags i got for it iam still 200 bucks under the smithand wesson 15 plus with the norinco your not scared to scratch it up like the others

Another dirt cheap option is to get a 10/22 and a chassis kit like the Archangel Carbine and other new ones coming in 2011.

You are planning on shooting 22 anyways, by having a 10/22, mag capacity is not restricted and there will be lots of new products in assault rifle looking chassis.

I have both. I love my blinged up Norc and will not bother to get a 22 conversion because I have my 10/22. Odds are my 10/22 will run better

Thats another option for me, i do have a 10/22 carbine that i have been considering an archangel kit and shorty heavy barrel for. Waiting for a good deal on a conversion kit for it.

Not sure exactly what you're saying, but there is no limit on magazine capacity for an AR-15 conversion to .22LR. Mine has a 26 rd mag.

I love my Norinco M4. I bought it and ordered the .22 conversion kit right away and its my dedicated .22 plinker until I can get components together to reload .223. For $1,100 I got my M4 , conversion kit, and spare mags. The fit and finish is always arguable for those who have the brand names. The new anodized norincos are great. One day I might buy a DPMS or something but in the mean time i'm in the game and just as reliable as the prettier ARs.
