My dad asked me to post this as he's looking into picking a new one up just for fun. What is a decent ammo you can run through the M14S? Brand names, weights, etc?

I've read a few posts about 308's but no one really stated a decent brand and I've seen some people say only run the Norinco .308 ammo.

Post your Q in the Main Battle Rifles section and I'm sure you'll get responses. I've only shot a hundred or so rounds of S.A. surplus, so no ".308" experience for you. Stick to 168 gr or below if shooting a lot. :nest:

My dad was mainly looking at what type of ammo that he could run to the local gunshop or canadian tire and pick up rather than look online for surplus ammo.

Remington sells a "UMC" brand ammo that has a 150 grain full metal jacket similar to the military ammo. That would work well and be cheap.

Winchester sells a similar "white box" ammo.

Costing a bit more, any 150 gr 308 hunting ammo.

Cheap Winchester Super X got me 3-4" group after working on the
rifle for few months :)

Federal 150's produce decent accuracy in mine. 1.5" at 100 yards in a gun that's had a little work done to it. Certainly competent for most hunting shots.

Every gun is differant. What one gun likes another may not even thought they are the same make and model. Try differant brands. If you are just going to buy locally then you pretty much take what you can get. Keep it under 165 grains for the m14. If you are just plinking the cheapest is the best.

Federal Power Shock 150's (very common and least expensive factory stuff) is very often used by M14 owners, including me. You can also use their 165's. If you're going to hunt then I would suggest Federal Vital Shock 165's loaded with Gamekings, more expensive, but much better ammo. At longer ranges the 165 boattails blow away the 150's for retained energy and better trajectory.
