Normal wear?

I recently got a brand new Benelli Super Nova. I have only 50 shells that I have shot through it, and noticed a bunch of scratches on the inside of the receiver as well as a black material that looked like it was chipping away and exposing the metal underneath. Both the scratches and material are at the top of the receiver where the bolt is moving back and forth.

Does this sound like normal wear?

Thanks.

any pics? that would help?

On a related note... I assume this inside scratch is normal? Gun seems mint otherwise (it was rarely used though). Mossberg 590.

I have the same marking on my 590A1, and it goes up a bit higher inside the receiver as well. Not sure what it's from but I didn't think much of it. I just thought maybe I hadn't lubed the parts good enough and something was rubbing. But the gun works fine. I'm a clean freak about everything and so I don't like marks, nicks, or scratches anywhere on my gun, but I just assumed it to be normal. But then again I could be wrong. I dunno. Someone else have any input?

Yes, it does go up a bit higher inside. Guess it is just normal from the shell brass.

Finally got pics up. First up is a pic of the scratches closer to the front of the receiver.

Next pic you can see where it looks like the black material inside is chipped along with some other scratches. This is closer to the rear of the receiver.

Hey --

Not sure how much help I can be, but my Supernova doesn't appear to have any scratches or chipping -- it's seen about 600 rounds.

Here's a picture of my receiver.

OMG you bunch of OCD CGN :p

Mossberg
thats normal wear and dont beleave the BS folk lore about alloy wearing out lol. Every Mossy I have seen has that wear, so no worries ;) Hell the US army could not break it so I triple dog dare you to wear it out!

Benelli
As for the chips? well there not chips, but excess plastic on the rails "if it wears away good if not no biggie" The scratches are normal and you will see more but it will not effect a thing.

The Mossberg and Benelli are two of the toughest shotguns out there so if you wear one out you are a god among men :D

My bolt carrier is casted too on my 590A1

The gun shoots fine, but getting it brand new, shooting only 50 rounds through it and seeing the receiver like that kind of scared me!!

Norrish - it looks almost as though yours doesn't have the black material on yours at all.

Maybe mine had plastic and I chipped it away while throwin lead down range?

Like Dsiwy said, I don't think the wear on your shotgun will effect your performance... what do you think is causing these scratches?

That's funny...I have an 870 with over 30 000rds thru it and it doesn't have any scratches or flaking material on the inside of the receiver! Lol! Guns are like cars...if you want them to stay looking like new it's best to not use them. Now I don't know about you folk but I don't see the fun in doing that!!!
