North Eastern Arms 12.5" AR review: range trip 2

SHILL!!!!!

;)

good report.

I'll admit I had not even considered the magwell as a probable weak point. I have no idea what kind of stresses are placed on this part of the lower...obviously during firing, basically nothing. Whether there is any significant event that could place critical stress on the lower in that section without placing vastly more stress on the user I'm not certain, but maybe down the road when I get another lower from NEA I'll drive over this one with my 4runner and see what happens.

What was so special about the serial number that you would take an older version with known issues/complaints over a current production "bugs worked out" lower?

Fair enough. Besides the finishing process what are the differences between your version of lower and current units? I'm assuming is just cosmetic stuff right?

Thanks for a honest well written review. You're a great asset to this community.

Thanks very much...I have an information fetish and it's nice if it can benefit others somewhat.

To my knowledge the only significant differences are cosmetic improvements. I believe the surface finish is much better on later lowers. There are a lot of tool marks on my lower; there really aren't any noticeable tool marks anywhere else, and everything else is later production.

I am not aware of any redesigns on the lower so I think it's just a matter of better finishing.

.....the mag well on mine is .064 at the thinnest cut, but it is tapered, and gets thicker closer to the bottom .132

I really dont see that point taking a lot of stress, so I am really not concerned, I actually prefer the minimum of material on it, since weight is second only to reliability and accuracy for me.....

Is there a rim around the bottom of the magwell?

If you wanted to save even more weight, could not the magwell be made .040" thick all over?

Well written and reasonable review.

Did they stake the castle nut? It doesn't look like it from pic # 8 in your post, but it's hard to tell.

Also, since you posted the pic and I'm curious, what do the column headers (above all the slashes and water marks) in your notebook mean?

Clob, I believe the abbreviations above the columns in the note book stand for Malfunctions, Stoppages, Breakages.

Oh, sorry, I missed that. Yeah, in retrospect that was kind of pointless because if I'd encountered an issue I would have had to write a description. I wasn't really thinking when I made the rather primitive "table". Luckily I could just scratch each column as I went as nothing went wrong.

As usual, well written man.

And kudos x2 for being very clear and upfront about your current business relationship with NEA, even though you had mentioned it once or twice before, and it not clouding your judgement and review.

Thanks, I couldn't make out the hand writing. :D

No worries, just thought I'd ask. Makes sense now, I should have figured it out without asking.

I have to say, I'm intrigued by NEA's barrels. Are they heavy profile through their whole length? Do they dimple the barrel under the gas block set screws (unlikely given the price point - but doesn't hurt to ask). I wonder if they have gotten their rough chambers sorted out?

The chamber on this one is good. I couldn't really comment on any other, but I would guess this one is typical.

One thing I will say as I am currently post-birthday-celebration (not mine): I finally - having worked on Jeff for a year, and after carefully protecting every piece of information he asked me not to reveal - found out who makes their barrels. Obviously I can't reveal that but...yeah. I mean...yeah, I would buy an NEA barrel. Knowing what it is, I would encourage anyone who wants a barrel to consider an NEA. Note that for months and months and months I have not been telling anyone to buy NEA anything. I don't specifically recommend the gun, although so far mine seems like it will do well. I do, however, specifically advise people to seek out an NEA barrel. I know what it is and it is not what I would have guessed at all, and now that I know I would definitely, definitely try to track one down for any DMR project I was going to take on.

Tomorrow I will have a look at the actual diameter of the barrel and see if I can get some more information on it for you.

******please do not PM me to ask who is supplying the blanks. Obviously that would be an extremely unethical thing for me to say, and, I imagine, a direct violation of our NDA.

Misanthropist, you should probably take NEA up on replacing that pin. It shouldn't look like that. Its a small thing but if it breaks it might be hard to get out of the BCG.
