North Eastern Arms VZ/CZ Railed Handguard and Muzzle Brake (with pics!)

Other folks have posted numbers for variation in gas block/rear sight base width/rsb pin hole size, etc.

I have compared the two 858s I own. The gas block is slightly different on both. On one the top rear "lip" where the piston slides has a slight flare. On this rifle the rail fits very snugly. I have to press the rear of the rail into place to put the pin in. There's no noticeable movement at all. On the other rifle the rail drops right in. This one has very slight movement vertically at the gas block and rear sight base.

I expect that NEA will be able to refine the design to accommodate these individual variations.

It turns out there are 2 styles of gas blocks out there. one one style things are nice and tight and on the other there is a bit of play. Fortunatly we have a solution.

What would I recommend?

- When the 2-part unit is available, allow the top to bolt to the bottom. That should should give a good repeat zero.
The bottom guard is on the machines and will be out soon. Its super ###y.........

- Figure out what the issue is with T1's not being able to mount.
Mil spec calls out .206 between the teeth/rails, our mount is .190. To be honest in all the scope we tried we never encountered this issue...... it figures we would discover one now.......... This is being addressed in the batch of mounts running now. they will be ready shortly.

- figure out how to solve the variation in gas block thickness problem. Shims are great, as long as you aren't going to lose them.
We have a fix for this, for anyone that has one with wiggle it can be sent in and the new ones leaving our facility will have a set screw over top of the gas block.

... bottom line; I'm sorry I don't like it, I really wanted to. Like I said, it's so close to being what "I" want. I'm sure that since most shooters aren't using T1's that there won't be too many complaints. Maybe just post a notice and carry on? No one likes us cocky T1 guys anyways. ;)

PM sent. We will have a new one out to you shortly

Great news:
I just mounted my T1 on the rail and had no issues. The issue is the LaRue mount. I can understand why as the LaRue mount is pretty specific in its design. Just use the factory aimpoint base, its lower and if you need the QR function Aimpoint makes a very affordable QR upgrade.

I'm sure NEA is gonna update the spec on their rails but considering the fact that LaRue mounts are not legally being imported into Canada and that they are less then ideal for this application I don't think its a huge deal. Save the LaRue for an application that better better suited.

Agree 100% , the LaRue is too tall and too spendy for either the AK or the VZ58.
Now for the big question:
How is the Aimpoint Micro co-witness on the NEA rail ?

Its low, but considering the sight setup of the VZ that is a good thing. I hear NEA may be making them lower in the future.

... for you maybe. But for many, the sight is the most important part of the rifle, and I'm a fan of the T1. In fact I have 3 of them on my rifles.

I have a Low larue mount (ak/shotgun), and it's plenty low enough. The factory mount may shave off a bit of height, but the weak point on the T1's is a steel cross bolt threaded into an aluminum body. Bad setup. I'll give that up for a QD base that'll take years of my abuse. If it'd get another few hundredths lower, it'd be perfect.

Cowitness on mine is fine if it fit properly, but it doesn't.

Co-witness is important to me.
Being a simple knuckle-dragging unwashed peasant , I only have 2 Aimpoint Micro's in the house. Compared to 6 LaRue mounts.
Whoops , 7 LaRue's -- but the Micro mount could be for sale for the right price.

Ok Ladies............... It appears there is a small percentage of 858's out there whose dimensions on the sight and gas block are slightly under size allowing for a slight wobble. It is important to us that the end user is 100% satisfied with our product. We have a 2nd batch on the machines as i type this that will address the potential wobble at each end of the rail via a set screw on each end. They will be shipping out by the end of the month.

If you have bought a rail from NEA that has an unsatisfactory fit please PM me to arrange to have yours exchanged at no charge.

Gentlemen:

I truly mean this question respectfully, and while I have read much of this thread, I have not read it all.

However, have the issues with the new railed handguard interfacing with the Aimpoint Micro been worked out??

Inquiring minds would really like to know!! :)

regards

AbH

It has been worked out, as well it is now stable on any VZ/CZ regardless of gas block design. The first parts came off the mill Friday and will be going out for plating tomorrow.

The H1 mounts fine on the original design the only issue what It know of is the larue mount.

With all due respect, WRT gen 1 mounts, that is not my understanding, and I have that from two differnt reilable sources that have tried the standard mount. One of the individuals in question used an H-1 that I supplied, so I know the mount was correct.

That being said, I am very please that there is now a fix (Gen 2) so that one of the most popular, and Ruged micro-red dots can now be used with the VZ style of rifles.

Anywho...

My original NEA handrail I received had a small issue with the front legs that 'slide n' hook' under the front sight.
I contacted 'Charles' to discuss the problem. We continued our communication outside of CGN to resolve the issue and find a solution.

Of course 'Charles' stepped up without hesitation to stand behind his product. I arranged a parts swap with the retailer and received the new one last week.
The fit of the new one is night and day. Obviously somehow something went wrong and a part slipped through QC.
The front legs slide in like butter and the pin/holes in the gas block line-up without any hassle and the lock pin slides in without issue.
I have no trouble mounting my current chosen Rings & Red-dot.

It seems like there were one or two issues with a couple of the current rails, I would like to point out that 'Charles' has gone to great lengths to correct my issue and any others he has been made aware.
He is a businessman that stands behind his product, so I would not hesitate to order another part from him....like a Lower Rail.;)

So 2 thumbs up for NEA. Great product and Great Customer Service.
