Looking to get into 22 LR precision events, but have absolutely no experience. Just got my license at the age of 53, after waiting far too many years.

Perhaps a long shot (hah!), but are there any NSRG members who participate in the Thursday 22 LR benchrest events who would consider letting me tag along as a guest and take a few shots? I'd obviously bring whatever ammunition requested.

I haven't purchased my first rifle, but it will likely be a Ruger Precision - there's a nice used one at Reliable Gun in Vancouver.

Wouldn't even know how to mount a scope on it though! Could seriously use a mentor on the South Island to get me started. Please PM if that might be you.

Hi,

Better late than never! I can't be to much help due to location, however I will suggest looking at a CZ 457 MTR over the Ruger for starting out in benchrest style shooting, while still trying to maintain a budget?

If your going to shoot BR matches I would suggest a used BR specific gun like Anschutz or the like. If your branching into PRS style shooting then the previously mentioned CZ would be a better pick in my opinion. Enjoy and glad youve started your journey into the shooting community. If your near Summerland I would reach out to Jerry at Mystic Precision for advice. Hes a skilled shooter with lots of experience and can steer you in the rite direction. Welcome and have fun. Cheers Chris

Thanks for the replies and suggestions. I'd definitely like to get behind a few different options before choosing what to go with . . . crossing fingers a range member in the CRD is willing to help a newb out.

Just sign up get your membership buy some guns and go get shooting. You will meet plenty of helpful shooters at the range.

Island Outfitters can help you with scope mounting if you don't feel up to it yourself. Watch a few YouTube videos and see if it's something you think you can handle.

As the chair of the 100/200 Metre Rimfire in Mission, I have reached out hoping to shoot at their club when on the Island.
Two club addresses are:

nsrg.rifle@gmail.com

nsrg.secretary@gmail .com

Having gone through a number of rifles, there is benchrest (unlimited) and hunting rifle.
The CZ is a good choice and can be modified and upgraded with barrels, triggers and stocks.

OR you can explore the rabbit holes and spend your retirement funds!

I can't help with the North Saanich Rod and Gun as I haven't managed to crack the membership. I could however offer an afternoon outing to the Vic Fish & Game. Have a few small bore rifles you can trial; a nicley scoped Vudoo, a Rangemaster 37 either long scope or micro adjust peeps, and a heavily modded 10/22. It might give you an idea on where you'd want to foscus your attention.

I also suggest getting a 457 over the precision. My uncles 452, my 455 and my 457 all factory out perform the ruger precision

Amazing, thanks very much! I'll reach out via PM, likely after Christmas if that works for you. Are you in CRD or do you come down the Malahat from up island?

For those suggesting the CZ 457, are you talking about the base model which is ~$800, or the MTR which is $1,200 and up? I might just end up starting with the used Ruger, a Bushnell 3x9 rimfire scope for under $200, get started with a rest and all other accessories for under $1K. But we'll see, and thanks for the input.

Up to you. I’ve got ruger and cz, cz defintely better on every level even if you get a lower end 457 still very customizable.

That’ll work. Shoot a note when you’re ready.

There's a near critical shortage of ranges on the South Island, at no time in the last 25 years has NSRG not had a wait list. It is quite literally a situation of waiting for some one to die in order to have an open slot, which is filled immediately from the list. You might try looking into which group is running the BR matches, if it's an organization that's part of a sanctioning body, a membership might get you to the matches - that is how it works with PPC shooters.

It's insane the lack of ranges. So annoying that Heal's is completely off-limits, it's not like the CAF is constantly training there. A bunch of us should get together and lease some Crown land, make a proper 1,000 yard range, throw a trailer on the property for a clubhouse . . . actually, I'm going to look into that.
