North Vancouver Island Grizzly Bear Encounter.

Well I'm disappointed. I like to read bear defense threads because now and then some gem of wisdom will appear that can be useful to me. In this case a late night bush party that involved the inappropriate and probably illegal use of firearms was passed off as a bear defense thread, and will probably end up as a poster for the anti-gun/hunting crowd. Too bad.

Well, I see someone is selling two SKS's in the milsurp EE.....Says he needs $$ for his Jeep. One can't help but wonder if the reason why he needs parts for his Jeep is because there are BULLET HOLES in it!!

Nice for everyone to pipe up an be a ####in ####, an thanks to those that just kept their comments to themselves.

Yes my grizzly holds 5 shells, I have a +1 end cap on it from daves surplus. Yes that is 4 in the tube +1 chambered an safety on.

Yes you CAN see at night in certain area's there quite well due to the work yards at the logging camps & gravel pits lighting up the fog and low level clouds that come out at night. (You folks up island, you KNOW you can see at night in some spots, an I was in one of those particular spots.)

NO I WAS NOT HUNTING.

I'm selling my SKS's cause my jeeps rear leaf springs are FLAT, but if you'd like to provide a bogus alternative motive as to me selling my firearms, by all means go for it if that makes you feel special.

Seeing as how this is just become a pit for trashtalking, Admin/Mod just lock this thread up then.

All these comments about the anti's, well the anti's are all posting in this thread. Ya must be the kinda people who piss an moan if someone fires rapidly at the range too.

LOCK THIS THREAD OUT THEN.

You showed up at 6 pm, almost a full 2 hours after sunset, I wasn't there, but I will guess it was dark or pretty damn close. You then proceeded in this poor light to fire off a few hundred rounds. You then drank about 2 and 3/4 bottles of fireball and were admitedly completely intoxicated. You then emptied 5 rounds from a shotgun, and ran to the jeep. Instead of realizing your lunacy and getting in and staying in the jeep, you decide to grab more guns and be even more wreckless firing at sounds and the like.

PS Your excuse about light from the loggers???? If you were that close for the light to be adequate I also hope you had their permission. In addition, that close to a logging camp or logging setup you should be charged for shooting at sounds in the bushes. If my old man worked in that area logging, the COPPS would be at your door today.

There is no defense for this "Bear Defense"

Stop defending your very very very very wreckless drunken shooting spree.
Like the other guy said... if you're in dangerous game area, and are going to drink, drink moderatley or wait til you are inside 4 walls.

Let your drunkeness take the heat for your action that night. Trying to defend it now while sobre (I suppose) only make it worse.

Grove......thats a no no!! So you were able to see this critter due in part to the lights from a nearby logging show? Were you camping next to the Lemare Lake shop? There is a gravel/sand pit just down from there and they have HUGE spotlights in their yard that DOES light up an area the size of at least 2 football fields, especially in low fog.

Oh man...where to start.

1) u were just plain ####ing lucky for some many things it isn't funny
2) u ####ed up huge and were just plain lucky nothing bad happened
3) Prolly learned a ton of #### so a wiser Grove you shall be

If it went down like that you are really a lucky SOB. If I drinking ANYWHERE I make sure I have a safe place to crash. Be it in the bush, Mexico or at my Cougar next-door neighbours.

Last time I was at a bush party I skipped the tent as I was liquored and won't handle firearms in that condition...But sure as #### won't tent it with out one.

I slept in the truck...Took a bottle of febreeze to get the stink out but it was the only viable alternative.

Glad you are ok dude...Some of the best lessons I have learned were free. Some of the hardest were not.

Here's what I have to say about my grizzly bear encounter.

Nov 30th/Dec 1st 2008.

Find a good spot bout 12-13 km's along the logging roads a few km's from Nimpkish Lake and setup camp for the night, we arrived around 6pm.

Few hundred rounds later an we made dinner,

Lets skip over the drunken gunfire for now. Did you use your jeep headlights to fire off those 'few hundred rounds' before drinking?

I'm glad you are alive. I'm less thrilled at how it went down.

That's nasty scary stuff.

A dude fearing for his and another's LIFE sets out to alter the course of those events and uses what is on hand to do so. Being drunk at the time wasn't a planned affair, it just happened to be.

Good thing he didn't admit to being a warlock; we may have burned him at the stake for this.

I'll remember all this when Bubba comes knockin', wantin' ta have his way with yer wife, when your all pizzed up and half pazzed out - I'm sure she'll understand that you didn't take action because you new that being drunk, you shouldn't play with guns.... Don't blame her if she decides to take up with Bubba, afterwards.

It'll be a learning experience for all. Especially once it's posted on CGN.

Cheers!

Are you for real??

There are so many things wrong with the story.

Get a clue...

Driving out to the bush after dark with a three bottles of booze and getting drunk wasn't planned?

I look at it as another attention-whoring post with very little truth in the story although the anti-gunners lurking here are bound to get a pile of mileage out of the tale.

If they really believed that they were in any danger, why did they go to the vehicle then return with the sks rifles, instead of just getting in the vehicle, and driving away to safety?

Nope, not sure what you mean. I live in Port McNeill and have never seen the night light up from the fog. If it has been light up by lights, then you are too damn close to be shooting.

NO I WAS NOT HUNTING.

What were you doing up here than???

I really want ot understand your story, but another thing is, how could you see anything if you have a fire going and (guessing here) were probably looking into it. It would take at least 30-45 seconds for your eyes to adjust to see 40' away.

Yes there is grizz here, seen the tracks by O'conner Lake a few months ago.

You should probably contact Lemare Lake and see if they have any bullet holes in their equipment...
